たけのこは はじめ じびたの したに いて、あっち こっちへ くぐって いく もので あります。
Bamboo shoots spend the beginning of their lives below the surface of the ground, tunneling their way in various directions.
- じびた: The surface of the ground. Also じべた.
- いて: The bamboo shoots are treated as animate beings in this story, so they are described using the verb いる and not with the inanimate ある.
- くぐって: くぐる (潜る) means to creep through/past/under something, or more generally, to pass through something with some effort or difficulty.
▼
そして、あめが ふった あとなどに ぽこぽこと つちから あたまを だすので あります。
And at some point, such as after it rains, they raise their heads and pop up from the ground.
- ぽこぽこ: Onomatopoeia for popping sounds. This word also symbolizes a surface with many holes. Both meanings are at work in this case.
- だすので: The ので is connected to あります. The expression のであります is a more formal version of のです. There are more instances of this construction below.
▼
さて、この おはなしは、まだ その たけのこが じびたの なかに いた ときの ことです。
Well, this story is about the time when those bamboo shoots were still underground.
▼
たけのこたちは とおくへ いきたがって しようが ないので、おかあさんの たけが、
「そんなに とおくへ いっちゃ いけないよ、やぶの そとに でると うまの あしに ふまれるから」 と しかって おりました。
The bamboo shoots desperately wanted to go far away, so Mother Bamboo scolded them: "You mustn't go that far! If you go outside the grove you will be trampled under horse hooves."
- いきたがって しようが ない: Lit. "irresistibly showing signs of wanting". たがって is from たがる, which is made of たい "want to" and がる, a suffix that marks other people's feelings as they appear externally (this is merely a grammatical convention in most cases, and does not need to be translated). ~てしようがない means "to irresistibly ~", "to be unable to avoid ~", etc.
- おかあさんの たけ: The bamboo that is their mother. Here the construction XのY means that X is the identity of Y.
- いっちゃ = 行っては.
- やぶ: A grove, particularly a bamboo grove.
- うまの あしに: Lit. "by horse legs".
- から: This marks the sentence as the rationale for having said the preceding sentence.
- しかって: The verb しかる (叱る) means "to scold, to tell off", etc.
▼
しかし、いくら しかられても、ひとつの たけのこは どんどん とおくへ もぐって いくので ありました。
But no matter how much they were scolded, one of the bamboo shoots kept tunneling its way farther and farther away.
- もぐって いく: Present narration for past events is common in stories, especially when describing events as if they are witnessed in real time.
▼
「おまえは なぜ おかあさんの いう ことを きかないの」 と おかあさんの たけが ききました。
"Why aren't you listening to what mommy says?" asked Mother Bamboo.
▼
「あっちの ほうで うつくしい やさしい こえが わたしを よぶからです」 と その たけのこは こたえました。
"Because a beautiful sweet sound is calling me over there," that bamboo shoot replied.
- こえ: Usually means "voice", but can also mean "sound".
▼
「わたしたちには なんにも きこえやしない」と ほかの たけのこたちは いいました。
"We can't hear anything", the other bamboo shoots said.
- きこえやしない: This is an emphatic negative construction based on the simple verb きこえる, "to be heard, be audible". The construction is originally きこえはしない, with は inserted between the verb's masu-form (きこえ) and the negative form of する. In casual speech ~はしない frequently becomes ~やしない, which is easier to pronounce rapidly.
▼
「けれど、わたしには きこえます。それは もう なんとも いわれぬ よい こえです」 と その たけのこは いいました。
"But I can hear it. It's quite a sound—lovely beyond description", that bamboo shoot said.
- もう: An intensifier with no exact equivalent in English. The tone is somewhat similar to "really", in contexts where "really" is used to show disapproval or astonishment, but もう has a wider range of applications.
- なんとも いわれぬ: Indescribable, inexpressible. いわれぬ is an older variant of いわれない.
- よい: This catch-all word (lit. "good") needs to be interpreted according to context. In this case it means "lovely, beautiful", etc.
- The original phrasing is literally "indescribable good sound", but in practice, the first adjective has the force of an adverb that describes the second adjective: "indescribably lovely sound".
▼
そして どんどん はなれて いきました。
And it kept rapidly moving away from them.
▼
とうとう この たけのこは ほかの たけのこたちと わかれて、かきねの そとに あたまを だして しまいました。
Eventually this bamboo shoot had drifted completely apart from the other bamboo shoots, and ended up raising its head on the other side of the hedge.
- かきね: A hedge. The kanji spelling is 垣根.
▼
すると そこへ よこぶえを もった ひとが ちかよって きて、「おや、おまえは まいごの たけのこだね」 と いいました。
Then a person holding a transverse flute walked up to it and said: "Oh, you're a stray bamboo shoot, aren't you?"
- よこぶえ: A transverse flute. Lit. "sideways flute".
- まいご: Lit. "stray child", but can also refer to stray animals or anyone that becomes lost somewhere.
▼
「いえいえ、わたしは、あなたの ふいて いらっしゃった、その ふえの こえが あんまり よかったので、こっちへ さそわれて きました」 と たけのこは こたえました。
"No, no, it's just that the sound of you playing that flute was so beautiful that I was enticed to come here", the bamboo shoot replied.
- ふいて いらっしゃった: The verb いらっしゃる is an honorific equivalent of いる. The bamboo shoot is using this verb because it directly addresses a stranger.
- あんまり: A spoken, emphatic version of あまり. The construction あまりXのでY means "so X that Y", "the extent of X is so great that Y happens".
- さそわれて: The passive of 誘う, "to tempt, to entice".
