However he looked at it, that was no place for a pine tree to stand; so the peddler thought to himself: "It's probably that fox fellow, who has changed his shape to trick me somehow. Alright then! I'll act first and turn the tables on him."

Then he walked up to the pine tree, stopped to rest next to it, and started smoking a cigarette. Afterwards he flicked the cigarette butt into a cavity hole in the pine's trunk. He then smoked another one and threw it in too.

A long time ago, near the town of Izushi in Tajima Province, there lived a notorious fox.
- 今は昔: An idiomatic expression frequently used in folktales, having the sense of "once upon a time" or "a long time ago".
- 但馬: The name of a historical province of Japan, now included in the northern part of present-day Hyōgo Prefecture.
- 出石町: The official reading is いずしちょう. The reading まち, which is more colloquial, is due to the story's casual tone.
- 但馬の国 is one unit of meaning and 出石町 is another. Note that 国 (province) belongs to the first name, despite its position directly before the second name.

時々《ときどき》いろいろのものに化《ば》けて、村《むら》の人《ひと》をばかしますので、誰《だれ》も知《し》らぬ人《ひと》はありませんでした。
He would frequently transform himself into various things and trick the villagers, so there was no one around that area who had not heard about him.
- ばかします: The verb ばかす is the transitive counterpart of ばける, but the meanings are somewhat different. The former means "to take the shape of something, to transform into", and the latter is "to bewitch, to trick using magic", with the implied magic not necessarily being related to changing shapes.
- In Japanese folklore, foxes are considered to possess the supernatural ability to assume different shapes at will and bewitch humans with their magical powers.
- 知らぬ = 知らない.

魚《さかな》を売《う》り歩《ある》く男《おとこ》ありまして、毎日《まいにち》、近在《きんざい》を売《う》り歩《ある》き、僅《わず》かのもうけを取《と》って、暮《く》らして居《お》りました。
There was a man who peddled fish; every day he would walk around and sell them in the neighboring villages, living on the meager profits he earned.
- 男ありまして: The が has been dropped. Note also the te-form of the ます conjugation; this is normally used in relatively formal contexts.
- 近在: The neighboring villages, in the vicinity of the town.
- もうけ: Profits, earnings. Kanji spelling: 儲け.
- 居りました: The verb おる is equivalent to いる, and is often preferred in dialect or informal contexts, particularly in the Kansai area.

ある時《とき》、魚《さかな》をかついで歩《ある》ってますと、目《め》の前《まえ》に当《あ》たって、俄《にわ》かに大《おお》きな松《まつ》の樹《き》が生《は》えました。
One time, while walking with fish on his shoulders, he suddenly noticed a large pine tree that stood right in front of him.
- 歩ってます: A contracted form of 歩いています. Dropping the い in ている conjugations frequently occurs in the standard language, but the changing of 歩いて into 歩って is a non-standard feature of some dialects.
- The second part of the sentence is literally "coming into contact right in front of him, suddenly a large pine tree had sprung up". 生える simply indicates the presence of a plant in a certain place, and does not refer to the actual process of growing.

However he looked at it, that was no place for a pine tree to stand; so the peddler thought to himself: "It's probably that fox fellow, who has changed his shape to trick me somehow. Alright then! I'll act first and turn the tables on him."
- よしよし: An interjection indicating readiness and resolution. It is a reduplication of よし, lit. "good", which also has the same basic meaning.
- こちらから: From the subject's (the peddler's) side, as opposed an action initiated by the fox.
- 返り打ち: A preemptive maneuver to strike an attacker before he can carry out his attack. Also, figuratively, to turn the tables on someone. More commonly written 返り討ち.
- くらわせて: The causative form of くらう, "to be the recipient [of some kind of damage or painful blow]". The peddler plans to inflict something unpleasant on the fox and teach him a lesson.

Then he walked up to the pine tree, stopped to rest next to it, and started smoking a cigarette. Afterwards he flicked the cigarette butt into a cavity hole in the pine's trunk. He then smoked another one and threw it in too.
- 往って = 行って.
- 吸がら = 吸殻. A cigarette butt, a stub.
- うろ: A cavity in the trunk of a tree.
- はたきおとしました: A compound verb combining はたく (叩く) "expel by beating" and おとす (落とす) "drop".

すると、不思議《ふしぎ》にも今《いま》まで大《おお》きかった松《まつ》の樹《き》は、だんだん縮《つづ》んで小《ちい》さくなりました。
At that point, quite incredibly, the pine tree—which up until that moment had been large—gradually shrunk and became small.
- 不思議にも: The も is an emphatic particle, stressing the surprising nature of the statement that follows it.
- 縮んで: The reading つづむ is a dialect form of the standard verb ちぢむ.

The story goes that the peddler kept throwing in cigarette butts again and again, and the pine tree, with a hacking cough, was choking on the smoke.
- こちらは: The peddler. Lit. "this one", as opposed to "that one" (the pine tree).
- ゴホンゴホン: Onomatopoeia for a loud, hacking cough.
- むせて: From むせる (咽せる), "to choke" (on smoke, strong smells, etc.)
- そうでありました: The events are described from hearsay because the only one who actually witnessed them was the peddler himself.
