- 昭和十年: The Japanese equivalent of 1935.
- 駒込神明町: Komagome is an area in the Toshima and Bunkyō wards of Tokyo. Shinmei was a historical district in the southern part of this area.
- 行: When used as a suffix to indicate destinations of trains, buses, etc., this character is pronounced ゆき (lit. "going").
- 下谷: A historical ward of the City of Tokyo. Now a part of Taitō Ward.
- 池の端: A district located immediately to the west of Ueno Park, adjacent to the park's Shinobazu Pond (不忍池), hence the name. The usual spelling of this place name is 池之端.
- 弁天: Refers to Benten Hall (弁天堂), a temple situated on a small island in the Shinobazu Pond.
- 進行中: This combination of kanji words has an inherent verbal meaning, so it is used here on its own without adding a standard verb. 進行 is "proceed, move forward", and 中 is "while, during".
- 悲鳴をあげて: An idiomatic phrase. To let out a cry, to shriek, etc.

逃《に》げ出《だ》そうとでもするようにして上半身《かみはんしん》を窓《まど》の外《そと》へ出《だ》したところで、そこにあったセンターポールで顔《かお》を打《う》って昏倒《こんとう》した。
She leaned out of the window with the upper half of her body, as though making an improbable attempt to flee; at that moment she hit her face against an electric pole that stood outside, and fell unconscious.
- 逃げ出そうとでもするようにして: Lit. "doing it in the manner of even trying to escape". The basic construction 逃げ出そうとする (to try to escape) is expanded here by inserting でも, which adds the nuance of bewilderment: this particle marks the action of fleeing through the window as something extreme, unbelievable, etc.
- センターポール: A type of electric pole supporting the overhead power lines that supply electricity to streetcars. A センターポール ("center pole") stands on the median between two parallel tram tracks and supports two power lines, one for each of the tracks.

- 担ぎこんで: From 担ぎ込む, "to carry [a wounded person] into [a hospital]".
