いぬさん と おねこさん が ストーヴ に あたりながら ハイカラな えほん を みて いました。
Mr. Dog and Miss Cat were looking at a stylish picture book while snuggled against the stove.
- いぬさん と おねこさん: The dog and the cat are described as if they were humans. The suffix さん creates a friendly, "cute" tone suitable for a children's story. The お in おねこ mimics a woman's name (in Japan, many such names traditionally started with お).
- ストーヴ: Stove. An older spelling of ストーブ.
- あたりながら: Lit. "while keeping contact". The dog and the cat are sitting with their bodies touching or nearly touching the stove to keep warm.
- ハイカラ: Stylish, smart, chic. A Japanese-made word that is originally a transliteration of the English term "high collar".

いぬさん が もうしました。「ぼく は なぜ こんな ハイカラな 犬 に うまれなかったんだろう。このちぢれた毛 は どうだ」と じぶん の みじかい毛 を ひっぱりました。
Mr. Dog said: "Why wasn't I born as a fancy dog like that one? What is this frizzy fur supposed to be?" As he said it, he forcefully pulled at his own short fur.
- もうしました: The verb もうす (申す) is a formal or polite version of いう.
- ぼく: A masculine informal first-person pronoun.
- 犬 = いぬ.
- に: When saying "to be born as" something or someone, the particle に is used to indicate that something or someone.
- うまれなかったんだろう: The んだろう part indicates puzzlement about the cause or background of the verb (うまれなかった). The dog is wondering out loud why he was not born as a better-looking dog.
- 毛 = け. Fur.
- どうだ: A rhetorical question expressing the dog's discontent about his fur.

「ああ あたし は どうして この ペルシャねこに うまれなかったんでしょう。この 大きな 目!!」と えほんの 猫を みて おねこさん は もうしました。
"Ah! Why wasn't I born as that Persian cat? Those big eyes!" said Miss Cat as she looked at the cat in the picture book.
- あたし: A feminine informal first-person pronoun. A variant of わたし.
- うまれなかったんでしょう: The meaning is identical to うまれなかったんだろう, but in polite speech. Note how the male uses a plain verb form while the female uses a polite one; this distinction follows real-life tendencies.
- 大きな = おおきな.
- 目 = め.
- 猫 = ねこ.
▼
二人 は がっかりして しまいました。
The two of them grew thoroughly dejected.
- 二人 = ふたり. Refers to the two characters as if they were humans.
▼
が、ストーヴ の 火 が あんまり あたたかかったので ねむって しまいました。
But since the fire in the stove was too hot, they ended up falling asleep.
- 火 = ひ.
- あんまり: An emphatic variant of あまり. In affirmative statements, あまり means "too much, excessively". This sentence does not suggest that the fire was too hot in an unpleasant way, but on the contrary, that it was too hot—and pleasant—for the dog and the cat to keep feeling dejected.
