ものぐさ百姓《ひゃくしょう》がある朝《あさ》、めずらしく早起《はやお》きして、畑《はたけ》で種蒔《たねま》きをしていました。
A lazy peasant got up unusually early one morning, and then started planting seeds in the field.
- ものぐさ: Laziness, indolence.
- 早起き: Early rising, getting up early.
- 種蒔き: Sowing, planting seeds. 種 is seeds, 蒔き is from the verb 蒔く (まく), to sow.
▼
それを頬白鳥がみつけて「おじさん、今日は」といいました。
それを頬白鳥《ほおじろ》がみつけて「おじさん、今日《こんにち》は」といいました。
A white-cheeked bird noticed that and said: "Good day, mister".
- 頬白鳥: A meadow bunting, a type of bird common in Japan. The bird's name is normally written 頬白 (Lit. "white-cheek"), without the character 鳥 (bird).
- おじさん: A friendly form of address to a middle-aged man who is unfamiliar to the speaker.
▼
百姓はねむそうな眼を上げてみました。
百姓《ひゃくしょう》はねむそうな眼《め》を上《あ》げてみました。
The peasant looked up with drowsy eyes.
- ねむそうな眼: ~そう indicates an inference based on visual input. Based on the appearance of the eyes, the speaker concludes that the other person is drowsy.
- The sentence is literally "the peasant raised drowsy-looking eyes and looked [at the bird]".
▼
「おお、誰かとおもったらお前かえ。お前さんもはやいね」
「おお、誰《だれ》かとおもったらお前《めえ》かえ。お前《めえ》さんもはやいね」
"Oh, I wondered who it could be—so it's you, huh? I see you're up early too, buddy."
- お前かえ: A slurred form of おまえかい (お前かい). The final particle かい is an informal version of か.
- お前さん: A friendly, informal form of address to a man. This word has become uncommon in contemporary Japanese. おまえ (without さん) is in widespread use but conveys a much more intimate or rude tone than おまえさん.
▼
「え、おぢさん、これが早いんですって。わたしはもう百ぺんも歌いましたよ。」
「え、おぢさん、これが早《はや》いんですって。わたしはもう百《ひゃく》ぺんも歌《うた》いましたよ。」
"What, mister? This is early, you say? I have already sung a hundred times!"
- え: Indicates surprise.
- って: An informal quotation marker. It functions similarly to と, but can stand on its own as a quote-ending particle that expresses amazement, disbelief, etc. at the content of someone else's speech, similarly to "say what?" in English.
- 百ぺん: ぺん is the counter word 遍, which is originally pronounced へん. This word counts the number of times that an action is performed.

すこし憤とした百姓「それがどうしたと云うんだ」
すこし憤《むっ》とした百姓《ひゃくしょう》「それがどうしたと云《ゆ》うんだ」
The peasant, who got a little angry, said: "What's so important about that?"
- 憤とした: Became offended, got angry. The character 憤 was assigned to this word by the writer; it is not normally associated with it. 憤 means "furious", which is a much more forceful feeling than the one suggested by むっとする.
- それがどうしたと云うんだ: Lit. "what do you say is the matter with it?" This is basically a way of expressing annoyed indifference (like saying "so what"), but more bluntly and with a slightly aggressive tone.
- 云う: The character 云 is used in the same way as 言. The pronunciation ゆう, instead of いう, is a feature of Western Japanese dialects that has entered the standard language as spoken in those parts of the country. While ゆう and いう sound almost identical, this pronunciation is also carried over into other conjugations, resulting in forms such as ゆって instead of いって.

「何でもありませんよ。ただね、私はおさきへ失礼して、これからお茶でも嚥もうとしてるんです」
「何《なん》でもありませんよ。ただね、私《わたし》はおさきへ失礼《しつれい》して、これからお茶《ちゃ》でも嚥《の》もうとしてるんです」
"Nothing at all. It's just that I must take my leave now—I was about to go have some tea."
- おさきへ失礼して: To leave before the listener. Lit. "commit the rudeness of [leaving] ahead". The bird is saying that it will go away on its own, without waiting for the peasant.
- お茶でも: Tea or something. でも softens the preceding word and makes it vague; the speaker may have tea or other drinks.
- 嚥: This character has the basic meaning of "to drink" just like 飲, but with the added nuance of gulping down the drink. In this case it probably suggests that the bird is very thirsty after working so hard singing.
- 嚥もうとしてるんです: About to drink. ~ようとしている is "to be about to do ~". Here している is shortened into an informal form, with the い dropped to ease pronunciation.
