To make your sweetheart happy, a good thing to say is: "You know, last night I had a dream about you."
- 愛人: Can be a lover of either sex, but here it is understood (later in the text) to be a woman, with the intended addressee being a man.
- には: A marker of purpose or goal. Often attached directly to verbs.
- 昨夜: Can also be read using the on-yomi さくや. The kun-yomi ゆうべ is more likely to be used in conversation settings such as this.
- あなたの夢を見ました: Lit. "I saw a dream of you"—that is, "I saw you in my dream" or "I had a dream about you". 夢を見る means "to dream".
- が良い: An old-fashioned construction expressing a recommended or desirable course of action. Attached directly to verbs.

なお喜《よろこ》んで貰《もら》うためには、「私《わたし》はこれからあなたの夢《ゆめ》を毎夜《まいよ》見《み》ようと思《おも》います。」と云《い》うが良《よ》い。
To get her even happier, it is good to say: "From now on I'm going to dream about you every night."
- 喜んで貰う: Grammatically, the person who "does" the happiness here is the sweetheart, with the man simply eliciting her happiness rather than causing it. In the previous sentence, 喜ばす is the man's direct action on the woman. The difference is between directly causing someone to feel an emotion and subtly arousing an emotion in that person.
▼
またもし彼女と争うた場合には、「ああ、私は今夜あなたと争った夢を見なければなりません。」と云えば良い。
またもし彼女《かのじょ》と争《あらそ》うた場合《ばあい》には、「ああ、私《わたし》は今夜《こんや》あなたと争《あらそ》った夢《ゆめ》を見《み》なければなりません。」と云《い》えば良《よ》い。
Also, in case you have an argument with her, you should say: "Ah, tonight I'll definitely be dreaming about how I argued with you."
- また: Also, and.
- もし: Functions in concert with 場合 to indicate a hypothetical situation. The addition of もし marks the content as a speculation that is not necessarily going to be realized.
- 争うた: This has the same meaning as the more common form 争った. In the written language, verbs that end with う have an alternative form in which た and て form are attached directly to the verb's う, as seen here, with no change to the verb itself.
- 見なければなりません: Used in a sense of inevitability, not of need. This usage is equivalent to "must" in formal registers of English.

そうしてもしも、彼女《かのじょ》が君《きみ》を裏切《うらぎ》ったときが来《き》たならば、
And if it ever comes to pass that she cheats on you,
- もしも: An emphatic variant of もしも. Used primarily for undesirable and highly hypothetical events.
- 君: A friendly term of address used primarily between men. Often said by an older speaker to a younger addressee.
- The original sentence is literally "should the time ever come in which she has cheated on you".
▼
いとも悲しく細々と、「私は毎夜あなたの夢をひとり見て楽しむことといたしましょう。」と云い給え。
いとも悲《かな》しく細々《ほそぼそ》と、「私《わたし》は毎夜《まいよ》あなたの夢《ゆめ》をひとり見《み》て楽《たの》しむことといたしましょう。」と云《い》い給《たま》え。
say with exceeding sorrow and in a feeble voice: "I will make a point of seeing you in my dream every night and enjoying your presence all by myself."
- いとも: Exceedingly, immensely. This adverb qualifies the following adverb, 悲しく.
- 細々と: An adverb that describes a manner of speaking: in a feeble voice, in a whisper, etc.
- ことといたしましょう: The underlying expression is ~こととする, "to choose ~ as a course of action", "to make a point of doing ~", etc. Here する is replaced with its humble equivalent いたす, which is then conjugated with the presumptive ましょう to express the speaker's intention.
- 云い給え: An old-fashioned construction that expresses a somewhat friendly command or request. 給え is originally the imperative of the honorific verb 給う, "to give" (when the giver is considered superior).

then unless she says: "I will come to you in your dreams and haunt you with my resentment for the rest of your life"—you are an immoral man.
- あなたの夢となって: Lit. "I will become a dream of yours". The woman will appear in the man's dreams.
- 生涯: Used as an adverb meaning "for the duration of one's lifetime".
- お怨みいたします: A humble keigo (honorific language) formula. The underlying basic verb is うらむ, to which are attached the prefix お and the auxiliary humble verb いたす.
- The verb うらむ means "to resent, to bear a grudge [against someone]", and also "to reproach, to hold someone responsible [for a grievance]". Here both meanings are combined. The woman vows to torment the man as an apparition in his dreams, in revenge for his disloyalty to her.
- 云われなければ: Lit. "unless [you] are told [by her]". The translation renders this as an active verb.不徳: Unworthy, depraved, immoral, etc.
- The reasoning here is that an otherwise honest man would incur the resentment of the woman if he cheated on her, because his disloyalty would have taken her by surprise. If, however, she does not express any indignation, it shows that she did not respect the man's character to begin with and did not expect him to behave any better than this.
