Eight Fools
> This text contains eight short Buddhist parables about foolish people. They originally appear in the One Hundred Parables Sutra, and are retold by Okamoto Kanoko in her short story of the same name.

塩で味をつけたうまい料理をよそで御馳走になった愚人がうちへ帰って塩ばかりなめて見たらまずかった。
塩《しお》で味《あじ》をつけたうまい料理《りょうり》をよそで御馳走《ごちそう》になった愚人《ぐじん》がうちへ帰《かえ》って塩《しお》ばかりなめて見《み》たらまずかった。
A fool was invited, while away from home, to a delicious meal seasoned with salt; when he returned to his house he tried licking just salt, but it tasted terrible.

愚人は客が来るまで日々の牛乳を搾らないで女牛の体内にためて置くつもりだった。
愚人《ぐじん》は客《きゃく》が来《く》るまで日々《ひび》の牛乳《ぎゅうにゅう》を搾《しぼ》らないで女牛《めうし》の体内《たいない》にためて置《お》くつもりだった。
A fool had guests coming. He stopped milking his cow for the daily amount of milk, with the intention of letting the milk accumulate inside her body until the guests came.

いよいよ客が来た時愚人は女牛の乳をしぼったがやはり一日分しか出なかった。

When the guests arrived at last, the fool milked the cow—but all that came out of her was, as always, a single day's worth of milk.

愚な富豪が木匠を呼んで三重楼を建て度いが、自分は三重楼の下の二層は要らない、上一層だけが欲しいと云った。
愚《おろか》な富豪《ふごう》が木匠《もくしょう》を呼《よ》んで三重楼《さんじゅうろう》を建《た》て度《た》いが、自分《じぶん》は三重楼《さんじゅうろう》の下《した》の二層《にそう》は要《い》らない、上《うえ》一層《いっそう》だけが欲《ほ》しいと云《い》った。
A wealthy fool once called a master carpenter and told him: I wish to build a three-storied turret, but I don't need the turret's two bottom floors—I only want the top one.

或《ある》愚男《ぐだん》が海《うみ》に盂《う》を落《おと》した。
A certain foolish man dropped a bowl into the sea.

The man immediately made a drawing of the appearance of the water currents and other identifying features of the spot where he had dropped it.

The man searched that place and tried to find the bowl, but did not find it.

Parable 5

五人の男が公平に金を出し合って一婢を雇った。
五人《ごにん》の男《おとこ》が公平《こうへい》に金《かね》を出《だ》し合《あ》って一婢《いちひ》を雇《やと》った。
Five men clubbed together and hired a maidservant, with each of them paying an equal amount of money.

一人の男が怒って婢に十鞭を与えると他の四人も権利を主張して婢に十鞭ずつを与えた。

One of the men became angry and gave the maidservant ten lashes, at which point the other four men also asserted their rights and gave her ten lashes each.

田夫が貴姫を恋するこころを人に打ち明けた。
田夫《でんぷ》が貴姫《きき》を恋《こい》するこころを人《ひと》に打《う》ち明《あ》けた。
A peasant confided in another person about his feelings of love for a princess.

人は「王女に汝の思いを通じたが汝を王女は嫌いと云った」と告げたにも拘らず田夫は強いても王女に自分を認めさせようとした。
人《ひと》は「王女《おうじょ》に汝《なんじ》の思《おも》いを通《つう》じたが汝《なんじ》を王女《おうじょ》は嫌《きら》いと云《い》った」と告《つ》げたにも拘《かかわ》らず田夫《でんぷ》は強《し》いても王女《おうじょ》に自分《じぶん》を認《みと》めさせようとした。
The other person later informed the peasant: "I conveyed your feelings to the princess, but the princess said she disliked you". Regardless, the peasant was determined to make the princess recognize his worth by hook or by crook.

一隊商が曠野で颶風に遇った時、野神に供うる人身御供として案内人を殺した。
一隊商《いったいしょう》が曠野《こうや》で颶風《ぐふう》に遇《あ》った時《とき》、野神《のがみ》に供《そな》うる人身御供《ひとみごくう》として案内人《あんないじん》を殺《ころ》した。
When a caravan traveling through the prairies got caught in a fierce typhoon, the travelers killed their guide in order to offer him as a human sacrifice to the Deity of the Fields.

或人が食に飢え七枚の煎餅を喰べた。
或人《あるひと》が食《しょく》に飢《う》え七枚《しちまい》の煎餅《せんべい》を喰《た》べた。
A certain man was starving for food and ate seven crackers.

だが七枚目を半分喰べた時満腹したので彼は言った、「今の半分の為に私の腹はくちくなったのだ、だから先の六枚は喰べなくてもよかったのに」
だが七枚目《しちまいめ》を半分《はんぶん》喰《た》べた時《とき》満腹《まんぷく》したので彼《かれ》は言《い》った、「今《いま》の半分《はんぶん》の為《ため》に私《わたし》の腹《はら》はくちくなったのだ、だから先《さき》の六枚《ろくまい》は喰《た》べなくてもよかったのに」
But after he ate the seventh cracker halfway through he felt satiated, and said: "It's because of this half that my stomach got full; I could have done without eating the first six crackers".

- 塩ばかり: Salt and nothing but it, i.e., salt in its pure taste, without being added to other food.
- なめて: From 舐める (なめる), lick.

- 愚な富豪: Lit. "a foolish rich person". More naturally translates as "a wealthy fool".
- 建て度い: The character 度 can be used for spelling the auxiliary たい (want to). This is rare nowadays, and たい is nearly always written in hiragana.
- This famous parable illustrates the absurdity of blindly pursuing a goal while disregarding the process necessary to accomplish it. The moral is that it is necessary to value the process even more than the goal—a common theme in Indian thought, including Buddhism.

- 盂: A bowl, a shallow vessel used for serving rice.

- 貴姫: Lit. "noble princess", "noble young lady". This is not a standard Japanese word, but the writer's own creative kanji compound.

- 汝: An archaic word for "you" (masculine). Often used in historical literature, folktales, etc.
- 思い: Feelings, especially romantic ones.
- 強いても: Lit. "even by force, even against her will".

- 曠野: Prairies, expansive plains. Also written 広野.
- 颶風: Typhoon, hurricane. Also signifies a fierce storm in general.
- 供うる: An older variant of そなえる, to offer a sacrifice, to make an offering (to a deity, spirit, etc.).

What was the fate of the caravan travelers who had lost their guide?
- 等: A plural marker.
- 如何: The construction ~は如何 is a question that means "what will become of ~?" It is usually used rhetorically in situations where there is no immediate answer, often implying that no positive result can be expected.

- 食に飢え: Starve for food. 飢えis the mid-sentence pause form of the verb うえる, "to starve".
- 煎餅: A thin cracker made of wheat or rice flour.
- 喰べた = 食べた.

- くちくなった: From the adjective くちい "to be stuffed" (said of the stomach) and the verb なる, "to become".
- ~なくてもよかったのに: Lit. "despite the fact that it would have been alright even if ~ had not been done". のに expresses regret both about what actually happened and the unrealized alternative. The part that did happen is left unsaid; for example, the complete sentence here would have been "Although I could have done without eating the first six crackers, unfortunately I did eat them".
