One night, when a pair of firemen were going about their night patrol, a blue fire suddenly started to blaze right in front of their eyes, floating gently in the air.
- 人魂 (in the story's title): A ghost light. In Japanese folklore, a term for the spirit of a deceased person transformed into a mysterious blue fireball. This fireball floats around in the air and can interact with living people.
- 仕事師: Construction workers, particularly those who did double duty as members of local fire brigades. Since the buildings in historical Japan were built almost exclusively of wood, the professional skills of construction workers were also valuable in firefighting activities. This traditional dual role was a common fixture in the Edo period; the plot of the story likely takes place in Edo (Tokyo) in the early modern times.
- 某夜: Note the special reading chosen by the writer. The characters mean "one night" but Tanaka gave them the reading "one day", making the statement more generalized and less focused on the time of day (which is also redundantly indicated by the following word). Tanaka often substitutes his own kanji readings for the standard ones as a means of creating subtle shades or additional layers of meanings. More examples can be seen below in the text.
- 夜廻り: Night patrol. As fires were so common in ancient and early modern Japan, firefighters would routinely patrol the streets so they could spot fires and respond to them before they went out of control.
- ふうわりと: Onomatopoeia for gentle flotation in the air.
- 燃えた: The non-continuative form indicates a momentary action, i.e., the moment when the fire started to burn.

二人は驚いて手にしていた鳶口で、それを敲こうとすると、火の玉は吃驚したように向うの方へ往った。
二人《ふたり》は驚《おどろ》いて手《て》にしていた鳶口《とびぐち》で、それを敲《たた》こうとすると、火《ひ》の玉《たま》は吃驚《びっくり》したように向《むこ》うの方《ほう》へ往《い》った。
The two of them were startled and tried to strike it with the fire hooks they were carrying in their hands; then the fireball bolted away as if frightened by them.
- 鳶口: A fire hook. A long pole with an angled metal tip, carried by premodern firefighters and used for manipulating burning wood. The same tool was also used in the firefighters' regular work as construction workers. The term for this tool comes from the visual similarity between its metal tip and the beak of a kite (a common bird of prey in Japan). This kind of fire hook was so closely associated with 仕事師 workers that their dual profession was also known as 鳶の者, "kite men".
- 敲こう: From たたく, to strike, to beat. More commonly written 叩く.
▼
二人は鳶口を揮りながら追っかけた。
二人《ふたり》は鳶口《とびぐち》を揮《ふ》りながら追《お》っかけた。
The two men, brandishing their fire hooks, started chasing it.
- 追っかけた: The verb 追っかける is a colloquial variant of 追いかける, "to go after, to chase [someone]".
▼
そして、数町往ったところで、その火の玉は唯ある巷へ折れて、その突きあたりの家の櫺子窓からふわふわと入ってしまった。
そして、数町《すうちょう》往《い》ったところで、その火《ひ》の玉《たま》は唯《と》ある巷《ろじ》へ折《お》れて、その突《つ》きあたりの家《いえ》の櫺子窓《れんじまど》からふわふわと入《はい》ってしまった。
After traveling several hundred meters, that fireball turned into a certain alley, where it gently passed through the lattice window of a house that stood at the end.
- 数町: A 町 is a measurement of distance approximately equivalent to 109 meters. In the context of an urban environment it can also be translated as a "block".
- 唯ある: The expression とある means "one, a certain". The kanji used here is technically unrelated in reading or meaning to this word; it means "only", "just". It was probably included in order to create the connotation of "just another alley".
- 巷: An interior street in a neighborhood. The normal reading is ちまた; the reading ろじ comes from the similar word 路地, which means an alley, a lane.
- 突きあたり: A cul-de-sac, the end of a street.
- 櫺子窓: A lattice window, usually made of wood with vertical bars set close together to let daylight in while blocking the view from the outside. A common element of Japanese houses.
▼
と、家の中から苦しそうな呻きが聞えて来た。
と、家《いえ》の中《なか》から苦《くる》しそうな呻《うめ》きが聞《きこ》えて来《き》た。
After that, groans of pain came from inside the house.
- と: A conjunction marking time sequence. "Then", "thereupon". When used alone at the beginning of a sentence, it has the same grammatical function as that of a と that follows verbs.
- 苦しそうな呻き: Lit. "groans that sound like [someone is] is suffering".
▼
それと同時に年とった女の声がした。
それと同時《どうじ》に年《とし》とった女《おんな》の声《こえ》がした。
At the same time, the voice of an old woman was heard.
- 年とった: Old, elderly. Lit. "having taken on years".
▼
「お爺さん、これお爺さん、何をそんなに魘されてるのだよ」
「お爺《とっ》さん、これお爺《とっ》さん、何《なに》をそんなに魘《うな》されてるのだよ」
"Dad! Hey, dad! What's that nightmare you're having? Why are you moaning so much?"
- お爺さん: The wife is calling the her husband "dad". In Japan it is common for people to call their spouses by their role in the family. Here おとうさん became おとっさん because it was pronounced hastily with a sense of alarm and urgency.
- The usual reading of お爺さん is おじいさん, "grandfather".
- これ: An interjection used to attract someone's attention.
- The verb 魘される means "to groan in one's sleep because of a nightmare". 何をそんなに魘されてるのだよ is literally "what the heck are you groaning about so much in your sleep?"

- 乃公: A masculine first-person pronoun, used by older men.
- かんちがい = 勘違い. A misunderstanding. Mistaking something/someone for something/someone else.
- しやがった: The verb する combined with the auxiliary verb やがる, which expresses contempt toward the subject of the main verb.
- 何をかんちがいしやがったのか: Lit. "what did [those fools] mistake [for something else]". Expresses bewilderment at the firemen's behavior, which is assumed by the speaker to be the result of some misunderstanding.
- だしぬけに: All of a sudden, out of the blue.
- 命からがら: An adverb meaning "to barely escape alive".
