鶴岡の城下に大場宇兵衛という武士があった。
鶴岡《つるおか》の城下《じょうか》に大場宇兵衛《おおばうへえ》という武士《ぶし》があった。
In the castle town of Tsuruoka there was a samurai by the name of Ōba Uhē.
- 鶴岡: The city of Tsuruoka in Yamagata Prefecture.
- 城下: Short for 城下町 (じょうかまち), a town built around the castle of a local feudal ruler (daimyō). Tsuruoka used to be such a town as well.
- 宇兵衛: The compound 兵衛, which originally signified an imperial guard, was a common element in historical given names. When used in a name it is usually pronounced へえ or べえ.
▼
其の大場は同儕の寄合があったので、それに往っていて夜半比に帰って来た。
其《こ》の大場《おおば》は同儕《なかま》の寄合《よりあい》があったので、それに往《い》っていて夜半比《よなかごろ》に帰《かえ》って来《き》た。
One time there was a gathering held by Ōba's friends, so he went there for a while and came back around midnight.
- 同儕: Peers, colleagues, friends, etc. Here indicating other samurai. The word is normally read どうせい, and is a Chinese-origin equivalent of 仲間.
- 比: An alternative way of writing 頃.
▼
北国でなくても淋しい屋敷町。其の淋しい屋敷町を通っていると、前方から葬式の行列が来た。
北国《ほっこく》でなくても淋《さみ》しい屋敷町《やしきまち》。其《こ》の淋《さみ》しい屋敷町《やしきまち》を通《とお》っていると、前方《ぜんぽう》から葬式《そうしき》の行列《ぎょうれつ》が来《き》た。
It was a district of samurai villas, as desolate as those in the north-central region despite its distance from them. While he was passing through this residential district, a funeral procession appeared ahead of him.
- 北国: A historical name for the 北陸道 (ほくりくどう) region in north-central Honshū, which faces the Sea of Japan from the coast to the north of Kyoto up to present-day Niigata Prefecture and Sado Island. The region is well-known for its dreary and rainy climate.
- 屋敷町: A residential district of villas that belong to samurai families.
- Tsuruoka, where the story is set, is located farther to the north (in Yamagata), so it is actually outside the north-central region. The writer's intention seems to be that the residential district is similar in its desolation to the typical variety of samurai districts that can be seen within the north-central region, and this is surprising given its location.
- Note the significant influence of the background information on the way the first sentence is translated. A literal translation could not have conveyed the accurate meaning.
▼
夕方なら唯もかく深夜の葬式はあまり例のない事であった。
夕方《ゆうがた》なら唯《と》もかく深夜《しんや》の葬式《そうしき》はあまり例《れい》のない事《こと》であった。
Holding a funeral at dusk is one thing, but a late-night funeral was almost unheard of.
- なら唯もかく: A construction that specifies an alternative scenario that would have been acceptable, conceivable, plausible, etc., in contrast to the actual situation faced by the speaker. The character 唯, which means "only", is the writer's unique spelling choice and is not otherwise used to write this word.
▼
大場は行列の先頭が自分の前へ来ると聞いてみた。
大場《おおば》は行列《ぎょうれつ》の先頭《せんとう》が自分《じぶん》の前《まえ》へ来《く》ると聞《き》いてみた。
When the leader of the procession passed in front of him, Ōba asked:
- 先頭: The foremost part. Vaguely indicates the person or persons leading the procession.
- 来ると聞いてみた: This と is a conjunction marking the preceding clause as the trigger that brings about the following action ("as", "when"). It is not the と particle that ends a quotation. Here it is all too easy to misidentify と as being the latter expression, because it is directly followed by a verb of speaking without any intervening comma. As this case shows, punctuation is often an unreliable guide when parsing sentences in Japanese.
▼
「何方のお葬式でござる」
「何方《どなた》のお葬式《そうしき》でござる」
"Whose funeral is this?"
- でござる: The verb ござる is a polite or honorific equivalent of ある, which was in widespread use in medieval and premodern times. The plain form is often used in dialogue lines spoken by samurai in historical novels, manga, etc. The ます form, ございます, is still common in the modern language as well, and used in formal settings. でござる is likewise the polite equivalent of the copula である.

対手は躊躇せずに云った。
対手《あいて》は躊躇《ちゅうちょ》せずに云《い》った。
The other person said without hesitation:
▼
「これは大場宇兵衛殿の葬式でござる」
「これは大場宇兵衛《おおばうへえ》殿《どの》の葬式《そうしき》でござる」
"This is the funeral of Mr. Ōba Uhē."
- 殿: A formal honorific suffix for personal names.
▼
「なに、おおばうへえ」
"What? Ōba Uhē?!"
▼
「そうでござる」
"That's correct."
▼
行列は通りすぎた。宇兵衛は気が転倒した。
行列《ぎょうれつ》は通《とお》りすぎた。宇兵衛《うへえ》は気《き》が転倒《てんとう》した。
The procession moved past him. Uhē was completely bewildered.
- 気が転倒した: An idiom meaning "lost his presence of mind", "was bewildered", etc.
▼
そして、家へ帰ってみると、玄関前に焚火をしたばかりの痕があった。それは葬式の送火であった。
そして、家《いえ》へ帰《かえ》ってみると、玄関《げんかん》前《まえ》に焚火《たきび》をしたばかりの痕《あと》があった。それは葬式《そうしき》の送火《おくりび》であった。
Then, when he reached his house, he saw the remains of a freshly-lit fire in front of the entrance. It had been a funeral's farewell fire.
- 焚火をしたばかりの痕: Lit. "the remains of having just made a bonfire".
- 送火: A fire lit at the entrance to a house during a funeral, at the time when the coffin is carried out of the premises. Also called 門火, "gate fire".
▼
大場は其の晩からぶらぶら病になって、間もなく送火を焚かれる人となった。
大場《おおば》は其《こ》の晩《ばん》からぶらぶら病《びょう》になって、間《ま》もなく送火《おくりび》を焚《た》かれる人《ひと》となった。
From that evening Ōba began suffering from persistent malaise; soon afterward he ended up as one of those for whom a farewell fire is lit.
- ぶらぶら病: Malaise, a persistent feeling of general illness and restlessness whose cause cannot be determined.
- 送火を焚かれる人: An adverse passive construction, indicating that something undesirable is done to a person.
