ある おひゃくしょうやの うらにわに あひるや、がちょうや、もるもっとや、うさぎや、いたちなどが すんで おりました。
In the back yard of a certain farmhouse there lived a duck, a goose, a guinea pig, a rabbit, a weasel, and other animals.

さて、ある ひの こと がちょうの たんじょうびと いうので、みんなは がちょうの ところへ ごちそうに まねかれて いきました。
One day, since it was the birthday of the goose, all the animals were invited to the goose's place and went there to have a feast.

これで、いたちさえ よんで くれば、みんな おきゃくが そろう わけですが、さて、いたちは どう しましょう。
At that point, the only thing left to do was to have the weasel come over, and then everybody would be present in full attendance. But come to think of it, what should be done about the weasel?

みんなは いたちは けっして わるものでは ない ことを しって おりました。
Everybody knew that the weasel was by no means a bad fellow.

けれど、いたちには たった ひとつ、よく ない くせが ありました。
But the weasel had this one naughty habit.

それは おおぜいの まえでは、いう ことが できないような くせで ありました。
It was a habit that can't be named in public.

なにかと もうしますと、ほかでも ありません、おおきな はげしい おならを する ことで あります。
But if I must say what it was, well, it was none other than breaking wind very loudly and intensely.

しかし、いたちだけを よばないと いたちは きっと おこるに ちがい ありません。
However, if the weasel were to be the only one left uninvited, he would definitely get angry.

そこで、うさぎが いたちの ところへ つかいに やって いきました。
So the rabbit went over to the weasel's place to deliver the message.

「きょうは がちょうさんの たんじょうびですから おでかけ ください」
"Today is the goose's birthday, so please come over".

"Oh, really?"

「ところで、いたちさん、ひとつ おねがいが あるのですが」

The weasel was embarrassed and his face flushed red. Then,

「ええ、けっして しません」と こたえました。
"Yeah, I definitely won't", he replied.

そこで いたちは やって いきました。
Then the weasel went over to the goose's place.

いろいろな ごちそうが でました。おからや、にんじんの しっぽや、うりの かわや、おぞうすいや。
Various treats were served. Soy pulp, carrot tips, melon peels, rice gruel, to name but a few.

みんなは たらふく たべました。いたちも ごちそうに なりました。
All the guests feasted to their hearts' content. The weasel, too, enjoyed his meal.

みんなは いい ぐあいだと おもって いました。いたちが おならを しなかったからで あります。
Everybody thought that things were going pretty well. They thought that because the weasel had not broken wind.

しかし、とうとう、たいへんな ことが おこりました。いたちが とつぜん ひっくりかえって、きぜつして しまったのです。
However, eventually something terrifying happened: the weasel suddenly collapsed and fainted.

さあ、たいへん。さっそく、もるもっとの おいしゃが、いたちの ぽんぽこに ふくれた おなかを しんさつしました。
How awful! Immediately the guinea pig, who was a doctor, examined the weasel's bloated, swollen belly.

「みなさん」と もるもっとは、しんぱいそうに して いる みんなの かおを みまわして いいました。
"Listen, everybody", said the guinea pig, glancing around at the worried-looking faces of the guests.

「これは、いたちさんが、おならを したいのを あまり がまんして いたので こんな ことに なったのです。これを なおすには、いたちさんに おもいきり おならを させるより しかたは ありません」
"This happened because our friend the weasel wanted to break wind and has suppressed it for too long. To treat this condition, there is no other option but to induce him to break wind with all his strength."

Oh dear. Everybody sighed and looked at each another. Then they thought that the weasel shouldn't have been invited after all.

- さて: A word that introduces a new topic.
- ある ひの こと: One day. ひ = 日.
- ごちそう: A feast (given as a treat by someone else).
- まねかれて: Passive te-form of the verb 招く (まねく), to invite.

これで、いたちさえ よんで くれば、みんな おきゃくが そろう わけですが、さて、いたちは どう しましょう。
At that point, the only thing left to do was to have the weasel come over, and then everybody would be present in full attendance. But come to think of it, what should be done about the weasel?
- いたちさえ よんで くれば: The さえ ~ ば construction is used to express the idea of minimal requirement. "If only ~ happened, the requirement would be satisfied". よんで くれば is from 呼んでくる, to call someone over.
- おきゃく = お客. Guests.
- そろう = 揃う. Be complete, exist in a full set.
- どう しましょう: A self-addressed question or expression of doubt, from the point of view of the animals.

みんなは いたちは けっして わるものでは ない ことを しって おりました。

- わるもの = 悪者. Bad fellow.
- しって = 知って.
- おりました: A more familiar equivalent of いました. In terms of grammar, ておる is used in practically the same way as ている.

- たった: Only, in the sense of something very small or minimal.
- くせ: A (bad or harmful) habit.

- おおぜいの まえでは = 大勢の前では. Literally "in front of a large number of people", i.e., in public, in the presence of others.
- いう = 言う.

- つかいに = 使いに. 使い means the role of a messenger or the performance of an errand. 使いにやっていく is "to go on an errand", "go as a messenger".

「きょうは がちょうさんの たんじょうびですから おでかけ ください」
"Today is the goose's birthday, so please come over".
- おでかけ ください: Honorific keigo formula expressing a polite request. The basic verb is でかける, "to go out somewhere".

- いたちさん: The name of the species is used like a personal name or title together with the friendly suffix さん. This friendly usage is reflected in the translation's choice of words.
- あるのですが: Using sentences that end with のですが is a common way to soften requests in order to avoid sounding too imposing.

- おから: Soy pulp, a byproduct of tofu production, which is rich in nutrients and used as a food in its own right.
- うりの かわや = 瓜の皮. Melon peels, rinds.
- おぞうすい = お雑炊. Rice gruel. The final や after this word is casually attached without completing the sentence, as if it were spoken rather than written.

- たらふく: An adverb meaning [to eat] heartily, one's fill, to one's heart's content.

- さあ: An interjection showing surprise, distress, etc.
- もるもっとの おいしゃ means "the guinea-pig-doctor", i.e., "the doctor who is a guinea pig". おいしゃ = お医者. A doctor.
- ぽんぽこ: An adverb describing a the bloated condition of a stomach full of food.
- しんさつ = 診察. A medical examination.

- がまん: Suppression, restraint, holding back.
- なおすには = 治すには. In expressions of purpose, には can be attached directly to the verb, as was done here: "in order to treat".
- おもいきり: An adverb meaning "resolutely, with all one's strength".

- よぶんじゃ なかった: A contracted form of 呼ぶのではなかった. In the affirmative, expressions like 呼ぶのだ can be used as an authoritative recommendation to act in a certain way. In the negative, this meaning becomes "should not".
