- 吾輩: A first-person pronoun used by men. This word, which is no longer in common use, has a rather self-important tone.

- とんと: Not in the least (in a negative sentence).
- 見当がつかぬ = 見当がつかない. To have no idea (about something).

- 何でも: Used when the speaker is unsure how accurate his statement is. This expression is usually used in the context of hearsay, but in this case it is qualifies the speaker's own dim memory of the facts.
- ニャーニャー: An onomatopoeia for meowing.
- 泣いていた: Usually the verb なくis written 鳴く when describing sounds made by animals, but the writer seems to have substituted 泣 to show the newly born cat in a more human-like manner.

- This sentence and the ones that follow use present narration, but they refer to the encounter with the student in the past. Present forms are used for greater vividness and immediacy.
- をもって: By, with. Marks the instrument, substance, etc. with which the action is performed.
- されべきはず: A combination of される "be done" + べき "ought to, should" (according to socially accepted standards) + はず "supposed to" (according to the speaker's subjective expectation). This usage of べき and はず together is an early modern expression that is no longer in normal use nowadays.
- 薬缶: Lit. "tea kettle"; also an abbreviation of 薬缶頭 (やかんあたま), "bald [kettle-like] head". Here it refers to the hairlessness of the face, not of the head.
