The letter said, in effect: "Based on this coincidence, how about if we go have a drink together one night?"

- 無しに: Originally the adjective 無し, which is the old form of ない. Here it is used as an adverb with に.
- 原稿用紙: A sheet of paper divided into vertical lines, each of which is further divided into uniform squares. Each square is for writing a single character (kana or kanji).
- むかった = 向かった. Literally "Faced [the writing paper]".

This sort of thing may be what they call a true random essay.
- 随筆: Random essay. A genre of associative and fragmentary short essays, which has been popular in Japanese literature from early times. The writer is supposed to jot down his thoughts as they come to mind, without planning the text's structure or message in advance.

- 明治四十二年: The 42nd reign year of Emperor Meiji. Corresponds to the year 1909. The emperor's reign began in 1867.

- 自分を: The direct object of the verb 思い込む. Verbs of thinking are used with a direct object in the construction AをBと[verb], to express the idea of considering A ("myself", in this case) to be B (a child who was not really born to these parents).

- 蔵: Traditional Japanese houses often include a small detached building for keeping the family's valuable items. This storeroom, called 土蔵 (どぞう), has thick plastered walls and small windows, and is specially constructed to withstand damage from fire, water, humidity, etc.
- 書きもの = 書物.

- These are all quotations of one or several of the persons with whom the author talked. Note the use of です and ます, which indicate spoken language, while the rest of the story is written in plain style.
- ひどく: The adverb form of ひどい. Can have either positive or negative meanings.
- お子: A polite term for a child or baby.

- 私も: The idea is that since those people had no doubts about the past, the writer also had to let go of his own feelings of distrust and suspicion.
- 放棄せざるを得なかった: A combination of the verb 放棄する "to abandon, let go" and the past form of the expression ざるを得ない "to be unable not to". ざる is a negative suffix. Note that する is conjugated as せ: this is an old conjugation that has survived in modern Japanese. It can also be seen in the formal negative form せず (the verb する + the suffix ず).

- 由: The purport, the point of a certain message. A formal expression that indicates the important idea learned from someone else's spoken or written words.

- 縁: A special connection, bond, etc. between people based on some common factor. Originally a Buddhist concept. Here the connection is that both persons share a birthday.
- これを縁に: The construction AをBに means "taking A as B", "with A as B", etc., and functions as a background to what follows.
- 呑まない = 飲まない.

The noun, which is preceded by an honorific prefix (お or ご), is often the connective form of a verb (such as 存じ, from 存じる), since this is perceived as more indirect and therefore more polite than a regular conjugated verb.
