This is what I saw in my dream.

何でも料理屋か何からしい。
何《なん》でも料理屋《りょうりや》か何《なに》からしい。
It appeared to be a restaurant or something like that.

広い座敷に一ぱいに大ぜい人が坐っている。
広《ひろ》い座敷《ざしき》に一《いっ》ぱいに大《おお》ぜい人《ひと》が坐《すわ》っている。
A large parlor with tatami flooring was full to capacity with a multitude of people who were sitting there.

それが皆思い思いに洋服や和服を着用している。
それが皆《みな》思《おも》い思《おも》いに洋服《ようふく》や和服《わふく》を着用《ちゃくよう》している。
Yet each person was dressed to his personal taste, in Western or Japanese-style clothes.

着用しているばかりじゃない。互に他人の着物を眺めては、勝手な品評を試みている。

And they were not merely dressed. They kept looking at each other's clothes and took the liberty of making comments about how they looked.

Those were the kind of things they were incessantly saying to each other.

And then I noticed that there was a strange skinny man seated at the very end of the parlor.

The man was wearing a dubious-looking light summer kimono in outmoded style, which was made of unbleached fabric and had a family crest printed on it in lacquer.

That kimono appeared to be the long-suffering target of merciless mishandling.

At that very moment a young, long-haired gentleman sharply rebuked him: "I see that you are fooling around with your clothes as usual."

That gentleman, out of some fancy which I could not guess, was wearing a white monastic robe somewhat similar to that of a Dominican monk.

I have heard something to the effect that such an outfit was what Balzac used to wear when he was at work.

Still, the man wearing the unbleached kimono kept saying nothing in reply. Looking at his behavior, he seemed like a totally spineless guy.

But then a third attempt was made. A man wearing a broad-shouldered and wide-striped jacket pronounced with a smirk his own half-sympathizing critique.

"Why aren't you wearing the kimono you had on the other day? Doesn't that amount to a retrogression? Then again, an unbleached kimono does not look that bad on you, either!

- らしい: In the past this word was used to express the writer's direct impression, like ようだ is used nowadays.

- 御召し: A polite word for referring to another person's clothes.
- 羽織: Haori, a Japanese half-coat worn over a kimono.
- 見えないじゃないか: The final じゃないか is a rhetorical question that forcefully asserts what precedes it. The meaning of 見えない remains negative but is made stronger.

- サアジ: Serge, a type of twill fabric with diagonal lines.
- 見給え: [Verb]+給え is a casual, old-fashioned command or request. 給え is an imperative form.
- 宛然たる: The linking verb たるis a written-style copula, which has the same function as ~な with adjectives.
- だから: Used to stress the speaker's words. In this case it has no meaning of "because".

- 意久地 = 意気地. Spine, backbone. Also いきじ.
- 代物: A disdainful word when indicating persons.

その先生はどう云う気か、ドミニク派の僧侶じみた白い法服を着用している。何でもこんな着物はバルザックが、仕事をする時に着ていたようだ。尤も着手はバルザック程、背も幅もないものだから、裾が大分余っている。
が、痩せ男は苦笑したぎり、やはり黙然と坐っている。
「君は始終同じ着物を着ているから話せないよ。」
これは銘仙だか大島だか判然しない着物を着た、やはり年少の豪傑が抛りつけた評語である。が、豪傑自身の着物も、余程長い間着ていると見えて、襟垢がべっとり食附いている。
