▼

- 三日と: When used with a quantity in a negative sentence, と marks a limit that is not reached. The idea is to make an emphatic statement about the low amount of something by stating that even this minimal quantity could not be obtained.
- 国元から: Qualifies the verb 受け取った and specifies the place from which the telegram was sent. This phrase does not indicate the point of origin of 帰れ despite directly preceding this imperative verb.

- 病気だからと: Marks the reason for demanding that the friend return home. だから refers back to the previously-mentioned context.

私《わたくし》にはどうしていいか分《わか》らなかった。けれども実際《じっさい》彼《かれ》の母《はは》が病気《びょうき》であるとすれば彼《かれ》は固《もと》より帰《かえ》るべきはずであった。
I did not know what should be done. But assuming that his mother was indeed sick, then needless to say, it was only right that he should return home.
- 固より: Needless to say, obviously, etc.
- べきはず: A compound of the grammatical elements べき and はず. These two words are rarely used together in everyday Japanese, but were freely combined in early modern literature and still appear nowadays in certain written contexts. The compound indicates a subjective conviction about the existence of a socially-mandated obligation: "one might expect it to be necessary to…", "it is only right that one should have to…", etc.
