おれはやっとのことで十階の床をふんで汗を拭った。
おれはやっとのことで十階《じゅっかい》の床《ゆか》をふんで汗《あせ》を拭《ぬぐ》った。
With great difficulty I finally reached the tenth-floor landing and wiped the sweat off my face.
- おれ: I, first person pronoun (informal, masculine).
- ふんで = 踏んで. Literally "stepped" on the landing.
- 汗を拭った: The original text does not explicitly mention the part of the body that was wiped, but it is understood to be the speaker's face, specifically the forehead.
▼
そこの天井は途方もなく高かった。
そこの天井《てんじょう》は途方《とほう》もなく高《たか》かった。
The ceiling there was ridiculously high.
- 途方もなく: Absurdly, ridiculously, etc. An adverb expressing a greatly exaggerated quality of something.
▼
全體その天井や壁が灰色の陰影だけで出來ているのか、つめたい漆喰で固めあげられているのかわからなかった。
全体《ぜんたい》その天井《てんじょう》や壁《かべ》が灰色《はいいろ》の陰影《いんえい》だけで出来《でき》ているのか、つめたい漆喰《しっくい》で固《かた》めあげられているのかわからなかった。
I simply could not figure out whether the ceiling, walls, and other surfaces were made of nothing but gray shadows, or finished with solid icy plaster.
- 全體: The second kanji is the non-simplified form of 体. This text includes several such old kanji forms, which were in use up to the postwar period. Where such characters appear they are left unchanged so that you can learn to recognize them, while the modern standard forms are shown in the second version of the sentence.
- The word 全体 (全體) functions here as a question intensifier, similar in tone to "what on earth". The translation conveys this elusive function using the word "simply".
- 漆喰. Plaster, mortar. Also written 漆食.

(そうだ。この巨きな室にダルゲが居るんだ。今度こそ會えるんだ。)
(そうだ。この巨《おお》きな室《へや》にダルゲが居《い》るんだ。今度《こんど》こそ会《あ》えるんだ。)
(Yes, this is it. This huge room is where Daruge is. This time I'll finally get to meet him.)
- 巨きな: The character 巨 replaces 大 to intensify the meaning—"huge" instead of merely "large".
- ダルゲ: A foreign-sounding imaginary name. Since this is not a Japanese name, the romanized spelling can be reconstructed in several different ways.
▼
とおれは考えて一寸胸のどこかが熱くなったか熔けたかのような氣がした。
とおれは考《かんが》えて一寸《ちょっと》胸《むね》のどこかが熱《あつ》くなったか溶《と》けたかのような気《き》がした。
Having that thought, I felt as if some part of my heart had become a little excited or lightened.
- 一寸: Note that this compound can also be read いっすん, which has a different (but related) meaning.
- 胸: Can mean either the chest or a person's heart, feelings, etc.
- 熱く: The adjective 熱い can be used in the emotional sense of "excited, heated up".
- 溶けた: The verb とける can likewise have an emotional meaning, "lighten". It is often written 解ける in such cases.

高《たか》さ二丈《にじょう》ばかりの大《おお》きな扉《とびら》が半分《はんぶん》開《あ》いていた。おれはするりとはいって行《い》った。
The massive door, measuring about six meters in height, was halfway open. I slipped through it and entered the room.
- 二丈: The old measurement unit 丈 equals about 3.03 meters.
- するりと: An onomatopoeia for smooth actions.
- はいって = 入って.
▼
室の中はガランとしてつめたく、せいの低いダルゲが手を額にかざしてそこの巨きな窓から西のそらをじっと眺めていた。
室《へや》の中《なか》はガランとしてつめたく、せいの低《ひく》いダルゲが手《て》を額《ひたい》にかざしてそこの巨《おお》きな窓《まど》から西《にし》のそらをじっと眺《なが》めていた。
The interior of the room was bare and chilly; Daruge, who was short in stature, was shading his eyes with his hand against his brow and standing at the huge window, gazing fixedly into the western sky.
- ガランとして: Completely empty, bare.
- せい: The kanji is 背. It is more usually read せ.

ダルゲは灰色で腰には硝子の蓑を厚くまとっていた。そしてじっと動かなかった。
ダルゲは灰色《はいいろ》で腰《こし》には硝子《がらす》の蓑《みの》を厚《あつ》くまとっていた。そしてじっと動《うご》かなかった。
Daruge's color was gray, and around his waist was draped a thick straw raincoat made of glass. He was completely still.
- 硝子の蓑: The word 蓑 refers to a traditional raincoat made of a thick layer of straw, which was wrapped around the body. Since 蓑 necessarily includes the idea of "straw", a glass-made 蓑 is an oxymoron—typical of the surreal world depicted in the story and in Miyazawa's writing as a whole. The actual appearance of this self-contradictory raincoat is left to the reader's imagination.
- 厚くまとっていた: Literally "clad thickly" in the raincoat, i.e., the coat itself was thick or wrapped around itself. Note that the verb まとう is transitive: in the original text, the subject is Daruge and the direct object is the coat. In the translation this was changed to an intransitive construction, in which the coat is the verb's subject and Daruge is the recipient.

窓の向うにはくしゃくしゃに縮れた雲が痛々しく白く光っていた。
窓《まど》の向《むこ》うにはくしゃくしゃに縮《ちぢ》れた雲《くも》が痛々《いたいた》しく白《しろ》く光《ひか》っていた。
Outside the window there were clouds, messily curled and disheveled; they were glowing pitifully in white.
- くしゃくしゃ: When referring to hair this word means "messy, unkempt". It can also mean "crumpled, creased", etc. when referring to paper.
- 痛々しく: Pitifully, pathetically.
▼
ダルゲが俄かにつめたいすきとおった聲で高く歌い出した。
ダルゲが俄《にわ》かにつめたいすきとおった声《こえ》で高《たか》く歌《うた》い出《だ》した。
All of a sudden Daruge burst out singing loudly in a clear, cold voice.
- すきとおった = 透き通った. The verb 透き通る can mean either "transparent" or "clear [voice]".

(天《あめ》の海《うみ》と窓《まど》の日覆《ひおお》い。)
おれの崇敬《すうけい》は照《て》り返《かえ》され。
From the curly sheep
in the western sky,
let reverence for me be reflected!
(The vast heavens and the window shade.)
Let reverence for me be reflected!
- ちぢれ羊: Refers to the clouds. Since it is a compound word, its second component (ひつじ) should be voiced as びつじ. An analogous example is the word 縮れ毛, "frizzed hair", which is read ちぢれげ.
- 照り返され: This verb seems to follow the grammar rules of literary Japanese, as was common practice in poetry up to the postwar period. This form is the imperative of the literary passive conjugation 照り返さる (from the original active verb 照り返す). The combination of imperative and passive, which is not normally used in modern Japanese, gives the meaning of "be reflected!", "let it be reflected!"
- おれの崇敬: Literally "my reverence". おれ is the object of reverence, the one being revered (and not the one revering something else). Daruge is demanding that reverence for himself be reflected from the clouds.
- 天の海: A literary term for the vast sky, the heavens.
▼
おれは空の向うにある氷河の棒をおもっていた。
おれは空《そら》の向《むこ》うにある氷河《ひょうが》の棒《ぼう》をおもっていた。
I was thinking about the glacial band on the other side of the sky.
- 氷河の棒: Seems to refer to the Milky Way. 棒 means line, band, etc., in addition to its more common meaning of stick, pole, etc.
▼
ダルゲは又じっと額に手をかざしたまま動かなかった。
ダルゲは又《また》じっと額《ひたい》に手《て》をかざしたまま動《うご》かなかった。
Daruge again stood still with his hand held against his brow.
▼
おれは堪えかねて一足そっちへ進んで叫んだ。
おれは堪《こら》えかねて一足《ひとあし》そっちへ進《すす》んで叫《さけ》んだ。
I could no longer bear this; I made one step in his direction and cried out.
- 堪えかねて: From 堪える "to bear, to withstand" + the auxiliary verb かねる "to be psychologically unable", "to emotionally resist".
- そっちへ: Away from where the speaker was standing and toward Daruge.
▼
「白堊系の砂岩の斜層理について。」
「白堊系《はくあけい》の砂岩《さがん》の斜層理《しゃそうり》について。」
"Regarding the cross-bedding of chalk-related sandstone."
- 白堊系: A geological term. 白堊 is chalk, a type of rock. The suffix 系 means system, line, series, etc.
- 砂岩: Sandstone. A different type of rock (incidentally, it is unrelated to chalk).
- 斜層理: Cross-bedding, a geological term. Denotes the phenomenon of inclined layers of sedimentary rock within a given geological structure.
