At about 7:30 p.m. the air raid siren is sounded. It is a clear night. I get my family into the shelter. The enemy has sent two aircraft.
- 警報鳴る: The particle が has been dropped. Diaries, especially when written in haste, often employ an abbreviated writing style similar to that used in newspapers, where particles and other elements are dropped if understood from the context.
An air-raid shelter, a dugout.
Counter word for aircraft. The aircraft mentioned in this diary are American B-29 bombers carrying out air raids or reconnaissance sorties over Tokyo.
▼
They flew to the west of the capital (our house is located in the western part of the capital) and passed through to the north, but turned back here again.
Lit. "imperial capital". The term used for Tokyo during the existence of the Empire of Japan.
The writer lived in the Wakabayashi district in the Setagaya area (now a Special Ward) of Tokyo.
▼
Unusually, anti-aircraft guns started booming.
Contrary to what normally happens.
▼
"Good thing we got into the shelter", someone says.
- The shelter was communal, and was shared by residents from the immediate neighborhood.
▼
They fired quite a lot of rounds. Later the news bulletin reported: "Direct hit on one aircraft confirmed". "Great", everybody said from their beds.
A direct hit.
Japanese writers often use quotation marks without necessarily indicating an exact quote of any particular phrase. In this case, too, the quote is actually a paraphrase of the collective sentiment expressed by what each of the persons in the shelter said.

As it is just one aircraft, I avoid waking the children. I only make these preparations: lights out inside the house, getting the radio, turning on the light in the shelter.
Lit. "since it concerns [just] one aircraft". 故 is a formal/written word for "since, as, because".
Lit. "leaving in the state of not waking". ~ないでおき means "to avoid doing ~".
Blackout, lighting restrictions put in place in preparation for air raids, so as to make it difficult for enemy aircraft to navigate visually. Indoor lights are turned off or dimmed, and windows and outdoor lights are covered or painted over in advance with a dark color.

Indicates being in a certain state. A written equivalent of で. "It is ~, [and]".
Lit. "third-day moon". A set term for a narrow crescent-shaped new moon. "Third day" refers to the first few days of the lunar month, in which the new moon appears. The lunar calendar does not match Western months, and in this case the new lunar month started around December 11.
Having an ice-cold appearance. Giving a cold feeling just by looking at it.

After a while both the noise and the lights died out, and it was once again a normal late-night sky. I go to sleep in my bed in the main house.
The main structure of the house, as opposed to detached parts that are connected to it with corridors. Here it may also indicate the house in contrast to the shelter.
