I was woken twice, last night and early in the morning today. Irritated. Drowsy. Cold. The second time I did not get the rest of the family out of their beds, only went around on my own to take care of the lights first.

Today I did get up, but my body is acting strange. The enemy raids are probably meant to effect what is called psychological warfare and war of attrition, and so far it is certainly succeeding.

The first time, I was awakened right after the enemy had dispersed poison gas. What happened was that the poison gas did not make my breathing difficult at all, so I thought: "Aha, it's a dream!" and woke up.

The second time, an incendiary bomb about the size of a freight car fell on the building where I was and sprayed fire all over the place. I took Haruhiko (I think) with me, and as both of us were barefoot we went into a neighboring house to borrow boots; at that point a real-life whistling sound was heard and I woke up.

The reason I have such dreams is probably because I am one of those with high sensitivity and I go to sleep being conscious that I must not fail to hear the siren; but I think I should make some kind of change to the way I sleep.

This man, too, did not show up the second time around. After all he must be cold and drowsy, and besides, it is nothing serious; so we had better not make the squad leader work unnecessarily hard.

I was woken twice, last night and early in the morning today. Irritated. Drowsy. Cold. The second time I did not get the rest of the family out of their beds, only went around on my own to take care of the lights first.
- 癪にさわる: An expression that means "to be irritating".
- 灯管: Short for 灯火管制 (とうかかんせい). Blackout, lighting restrictions put in place in preparation for air raids, so as to make it difficult for enemy aircraft to navigate visually. Indoor lights are turned off or dimmed, and windows and outdoor lights are covered or painted over in advance with a dark color.

Today I did get up, but my body is acting strange. The enemy raids are probably meant to effect what is called psychological warfare and war of attrition, and so far it is certainly succeeding.

But our side, too, must do some rethinking and work out better countermeasures, so that we will not play into America's hands.
- こっちも: Our side, we (the Japanese).
- 手にのらない: The idiom 手に乗る means "to play into someone's hands", "to be manipulated by someone", etc.

とりあえず夜分《やぶん》の当直《とうちょく》は私《わたし》が引受《ひきう》け、そして早寝《はやね》をすることにしよう。
For now I will just take on the night watch, and then get ready to go to bed early.
- 夜分: Nighttime (as opposed to daytime), in the evening.
- The writer apparently means that he will go to bed early and then get up for the late night watch. Note that the sentence indicates the sequence of making arrangements for future actions: first taking the responsibility for the night watch and then getting ready to sleep. The sequence of the intended actions themselves is the other way around—first sleeping and then doing the night watch.

◯二度《にど》の空襲《くうしゅう》とも、夢《ゆめ》のなかで空襲《くうしゅう》を見《み》ていた。

The first time, I was awakened right after the enemy had dispersed poison gas. What happened was that the poison gas did not make my breathing difficult at all, so I thought: "Aha, it's a dream!" and woke up.

- いっこうに: (Not) at all. Used in negative statements. The kanji spelling is 一向に.
- わい: An exclamatory final particle. Nowadays used mainly by old men.

- ゆえ: A noun suffix that means "because, due to" the state expressed by the noun to which it is attached.
- 本もの: Genuine, real-life. The idea is that the whistling sound is actually heard in the real world, as opposed to the sounds in the dream.
- プー: A whistling sound. Refers to the sound of an air raid siren.

私《わたし》は神経《しんけい》がするどい方《ほう》であり「警報《けいほう》を聞《き》きのがしてはならぬ」と思《おも》って眠《ねむ》るので、こんな夢《ゆめ》を見《み》るのであろうが、ひとつ眠《ねむ》り方《かた》を変《か》えなければならないと思《おも》う。
The reason I have such dreams is probably because I am one of those with high sensitivity and I go to sleep being conscious that I must not fail to hear the siren; but I think I should make some kind of change to the way I sleep.
- The quotation marks do not indicate an actual quote, but a paraphrase of the writer's thoughts, i.e., the consciousness under which he sleeps.
- 聞きのがして: The auxiliary verb のがす means "to fail to accomplish" the action expressed by the main verb.
- ひとつ: Something, a certain thing.

The leader of the firefighting squad of my neighborhood association is quite a reliable person, and always comes up to our alley to give us the all clear.
- 隣組: The smallest of the wartime civil defense units. A 隣組 comprised five to ten houses whose members worked together in various war-related duties such as firefighting, shelter maintenance, etc.
- 警報解除: The all clear signal, announcing the end of the air raid alert. In this case the signal was given verbally.
