In the third year of the Chiwu era of the State of Wu, a farmer from Juzhang—a man by the name of Yang Du—traveled to a place called Yuyao; while he was still on his way there the sun had set.

A boy holding a lute in his arms approached Yang on the road and said: "Please give me a ride in your carriage". Yang agreed and let the boy get in and ride with him; the boy then played for Yang several tens of tunes on his lute in the carriage.

Yang listened with pleasure. Then, as soon as the last tune was over, the boy instantly changed his expression to a demon-like face: he opened his eyes wide in an angry glare, stuck out his tongue, threatened Yang with this menacing look and went away.

In the third year of the Chiwu era of the State of Wu, a farmer from Juzhang—a man by the name of Yang Du—traveled to a place called Yuyao; while he was still on his way there the sun had set.
- 呉: The State of Wu (pinyin: Wú), an ancient Chinese state, also known as Eastern Wu. One of the three rival states in the Three Kingdoms period.
- 赤烏: The name of a reign era in the State of Wu, which started in 238 AD. Pinyin: Chìwū. The Japanese practice of naming reign eras originally came from China. However, unlike the current practice, there was historically no one-to-one correlation between the identity of the rulers and the names that designated their reign eras; multiple names could be used during the reign of the same ruler.
- 赤烏三年: Corresponds to the year 240 AD.
- 句章: The name of an ancient province, located within modern-day Zhejiang Province on the eastern coast of central China. Pinyin: Jùzhāng.
- 楊度: Pinyin: Yáng Dù.
- 余姚: A city in modern-day Zhejiang. Pinyin: Yúyáo.

A boy holding a lute in his arms approached Yang on the road and said: "Please give me a ride in your carriage". Yang agreed and let the boy get in and ride with him; the boy then played for Yang several tens of tunes on his lute in the carriage.
- 琵琶: A Chinese lute (pípa). The same instrument has also been adopted in Japan with some modification, and is known there as びわ.
- 一緒に載せてくれ: Since Yang's name appears in the sentence, this can be seen as a hybrid of direct and indirect quotes that are based on the same spoken words. The use of the imperative is possible in direct as well as indirect sentences.
- 数十: Several tens.
- ひいて: Play (by manipulating the lute's strings).

楊《よう》はいい心持《こころもち》で聴《き》いていると、曲《きょく》終《おわ》るや、かの少年《しょうねん》は忽《たちま》ち鬼《おに》のような顔色《かおいろ》に変《へん》じて、眼《め》を瞋《いか》らせ、舌《した》を吐《は》いて、楊《よう》をおどして立《た》ち去《さ》った。
Yang listened with pleasure. Then, as soon as the last tune was over, the boy instantly changed his expression to a demon-like face: he opened his eyes wide in an angry glare, stuck out his tongue, threatened Yang with this menacing look and went away.
- 曲終るや: The particle が after 曲 has been dropped. The word 曲 can refer either to the last tune or to all of the tunes collectively; the meaning is basically the same regardless of the interpretation. や is a conjunction meaning "as soon as".
- かの: A literary equivalent of あの, "that".
- 眼を瞋らせ: Lit. "make [one's] eyes angry", i.e., open them wide in a menacing glare.

それから更に二十里ほど行くと、今度はひとりの老人があらわれて、楊の車に載せてくれと言った。
それから更《さら》に二十里《にじゅうり》ほど行《い》くと、今度《こんど》はひとりの老人《ろうじん》があらわれて、楊《よう》の車《くるま》に載《の》せてくれと言《い》った。
About eight kilometers down the road, another person—this time, an old man—appeared and said to Yang: "Please give me a ride in your carriage".
- 里: Li, a Chinese length unit, had changing values throughout history. In the applicable period it measured approximately 416 meters. Twenty li are therefore the rough equivalent of 8.3 kilometers.
▼
前に少しく懲りてはいるが、その老いたるを憫れんで、楊は再び載せてやると、老人は王戒という者であるとみずから名乗った。
前《まえ》に少《すこ》しく懲《こ》りてはいるが、その老《お》いたるを憫《あわ》れんで、楊《よう》は再《ふたた》び載《の》せてやると、老人《ろうじん》は王戒《おうかい》という者《もの》であるとみずから名乗《なの》った。
Yang felt somewhat discouraged by what he had just experienced, but he nevertheless pitied the man for being so old and fragile, and agreed once again. When he let him into his carriage, the old man introduced himself by the name of Wang Jie.
- 少しく = 少し.
- 懲りる means "to learn a painful lesson", "to be discouraged by a bad experience", etc. Here the verb is in the continuous form to indicate the lingering disheartening effect of Yang's encounter with the boy.
- その老いたる: Lit. "his being old". たる comes from たり, an old precursor of ている that likewise marks an ongoing state or condition. The clause that ends with たる functions like a noun. The construction and function of this phrase are practically identical to the English use of a possessive pronoun and a gerund as seen in the literal English equivalent above.
- 王戒: Pinyin: Wáng Jiè.

楊は途中で話した。
楊《よう》は途中《とちゅう》で話《はな》した。
On the way, Yang started talking to the old man.
▼
「さっき飛んだ目に逢いました」
「さっき飛《と》んだ目《め》に逢《あ》いました」
"Something crazy happened to me a little while ago."
- 飛んだ: Crazy, outrageous, unbelievable, etc.
- The expression 目に逢う means "to experience something [undesirable]". The word 目, which abstractly represents the experience, is given a definite content by what precedes it—in this case, the adjective 飛んだ.
▼
「どうしました」
"What was it?"
▼
「鬼がわたしの車に乗り込んで琵琶を弾きました。鬼の琵琶というものを初めて聴きましたが、ひどく哀《かな》しいものですよ」
「鬼《おに》がわたしの車《くるま》に乗《の》り込《こ》んで琵琶《びわ》を弾《ひ》きました。鬼《おに》の琵琶《びわ》というものを初《はじ》めて聴《き》きましたが、ひどく哀《かな》しいものですよ」
"A demon got into my carriage and played the lute. It was the first time I had ever heard such a thing—a lute being played by a demon; that music is so awfully sad!"
- 鬼の琵琶: Refers to the music produced by the demon's lute.
▼
「わたしも琵琶をよく弾きます」
「わたしも琵琶《びわ》をよく弾《ひ》きます」
"I often play the lute, too."
▼
言うかと思うと、かの老人は前の少年とおなじような顔をして見せたので、楊はあっと叫んで気をうしなった。

As soon as he said this, the old man made the same kind of expression that the boy had made earlier; Yang let out a sharp cry and passed out.
- かと思うと: Indicates near-simultaneousness. The preceding action was barely finished in a perceptible way when another one followed it.
- 見せた: When attached to a verb's te-form, this auxiliary means "to perform the verb in an ostensible manner" (for another person to see and be impressed).
- あっと: Onomatopoeia for Yang's cry. The small っ indicates the sharpness or suddenness of the sound.
- 気をうしなった: Fainted, fell unconscious, etc.
