A robber got into the house of a certain scrooge, presented a pistol, and ordered the scrooge to bring out his money.
- ケチンボ: A scrooge, a cheapskate.
- お金を出せ: Lit. "Bring out the money!" Here it is an indirect quote but still conjugated in the direct imperative form. This is standard usage in Japanese.

ケチンボは、「ただお金《かね》を出《だ》すのはいやだ。その短銃《ピストル》を売《う》ってくれるなら千円《せんえん》で買《か》おう。お前《まえ》は私《わたし》からお金《かね》さえ貰《もら》えばそんなピストルは要《い》らないだろう」
The scrooge said: "I hate the idea of spending money for nothing. If you will sell me your pistol, I'll buy it for one thousand yen. As long as you get the money from me, you probably won't need that kind of pistol anymore."
- 短銃: Normally read たんじゅう ("short gun"). The writer chose to override this reading with the word ピストル, which has the same meaning.
- 買おう: Expresses the speaker's initiative and willingness to perform the action of buying.
- お金さえ貰えば: If only you get the money. The implicit nuance is: "getting the money will make everything else—including the pistol—unimportant, since this is the one thing you came for".
- The final verb of saying has been omitted because it is understood from the context.

泥棒《どろぼう》は考《かんが》えておりましたが、とうとうそのピストルを千円《せんえん》でケチンボに売《う》りました。
The robber thought about it for a while. In the end he sold the pistol to the scrooge for one thousand yen.
- 考えておりました = 考えていました. The use of おる instead of いる is a stylistic choice of the writer, and is common in many of his texts.

As soon as he got the pistol from the robber, the scrooge immediately pointed it at him and shouted: "Now, bring it all out—not just the thousand yen, but also the money you stole elsewhere. If you don't bring it out I'll kill you!"
- 撃ちそうにしながら: Lit. "while getting into the position of being about to shoot", "while assuming the appearance of nearly shooting". In other words, the scrooge pointed the pistol at the robber and threatened him. ~そうにする is the active version of the much more common ~そうになる, "to be about [to do ~], to nearly [do ~]".

- 撃っても: Lit. "even if you shoot". What is actually meant is "even if you try to shoot", "even if you pull the trigger".
- 弾丸: Normally read だんがん.

The scrooge threw the pistol away, ran after the robber and started scuffling with him in the street; before long, a policeman who happened to pass by pinned them down and hauled them off to the police station.
- 往来: A road, a street.
- 取っ組み合い: A scuffle. This word is made from a contracted form of the verb 取り組む "to take on someone", which is connected to the auxiliary 合う "one another". The auxiliary is then turned into a noun by conjugating it as 合い.
- おまわりさん: A patrolling policeman. The spelling with kanji is お巡りさん.

At the police station various checks were run, and as it turned out, the entire amount of one thousand yen that the robber had received was fake money, while the pistol was, after all, a real pistol.
- 贋物: Fake, counterfeit. Also read がんぶつ in more formal contexts (similarly to the distinction in formality between "fake" and "counterfeit" in English).
