In the Yanokura district of Ryōgoku there lived a traveling merchant by the name of Eizō.

That man made his living by procuring mosquito nets from Ōmi and selling them throughout the provinces of Shimotsuke and Kōzuke;

One day he went to Numata, where he came across a person who frequented the household of the Toki clan, the local feudal rulers;

Eizō bought from that person a mosquito net that, according to the seller, had come from the Toki household. He then returned to Edo and took the mosquito net to a pawnshop called Sanomata in the Tachibana district.

それは十畳吊の萌黄地の近江麻で、裾は浅黄縮緬、四隅の大房から吊手の輪乳に至るまで、凝ったものであったから主翁は気にいった。

The mosquito net was made of yellow-green Ōmi hemp fabric with a pale yellow crepe hem, and could cover a floor area of ten tatami mats. Everything about it was exquisite, from the large tassels in its four corners to the ceiling suspension loops, so the pawnbroker was very pleased with it.

そこで主翁は十五両で買ったが、それは一両三歩二朱で買った物であるから栄蔵は大喜びであった。

The pawnbroker then bought the net for 15 ryō. Eizō had originally purchased it for 1.875 ryō, so he was overjoyed by this.

The following morning, a messenger from Sanomata came to Eizō's house. Eizō, wondering what it was all about, went out and headed to the pawnshop.

浜町の親父が来て、吊って寝ると云って持ってったが、蚊帳の外へ、養老しぼりの浴衣を着た、二十位の女が来て中を覗いたそうだ。
浜町《はまちょう》の親父《おやじ》が来《き》て、吊《つ》って寝《ね》ると云《い》って持《も》ってったが、蚊帳《かや》の外《そと》へ、養老《ようろう》しぼりの浴衣《ゆかた》を着《き》た、二十位《にじゅうぐらい》の女《おんな》が来《き》て中《なか》を覗《のぞ》いたそうだ。
"An old-timer from the Hama district came and took it home, saying he would hang it and use it for sleeping; but he claims that while he was under it a woman of about 20, wearing a crease-dyed yukata, walked up to the net and peeped inside.

With these words, Eizō was given back the mosquito net.

栄蔵が後で探ると、土岐家の妾が小姓と不義をしたと云う嫌疑で、其の蚊帳の内で斬られたとの事であった。
栄蔵《えいぞう》が後《あと》で探《さぐ》ると、土岐家《ときけ》の妾《めかけ》が小姓《こしょう》と不義《ふぎ》をしたと云《い》う嫌疑《けんぎ》で、其《そ》の蚊帳《かや》の内《うち》で斬《き》られたとの事《こ》であった。
After that Eizō discreetly investigated the matter, and found out that a concubine of the Toki clan, suspected of having committed adultery with a pageboy, had been put to the sword under that very same mosquito net.

In the Yanokura district of Ryōgoku there lived a traveling merchant by the name of Eizō.
- 両国矢の倉: A place name in central Edo (now Tokyo). Yanokura was a district in the Ryōgoku area. The historical name indicates a location that is now found to the south of the confluence of the Kanda and Sumida rivers, near Ryōgoku Bridge (両国橋).

- 沼田: A city in Kōzuke Province, now in Gunma Prefecture. Was the administrative center of the Numata feudal fiefdom (沼田藩), which was ruled by the samurai clan of Toki.

Eizō bought from that person a mosquito net that, according to the seller, had come from the Toki household. He then returned to Edo and took the mosquito net to a pawnshop called Sanomata in the Tachibana district.
- 其の者から土岐家から出たと云う: The first から indicates the person from whom the item was bought, and relates to the verb 買って. The second から indicates the origin of the item, and relates to the verb 出た. These words belong to two different levels of the sentence: the indirect quote 土岐家から出た is a subordinate clause of と云う, while 其の者から is part of the main clause.
- 橘町: A district in central Edo, immediately adjacent to Yanokura.

The mosquito net was made of yellow-green Ōmi hemp fabric with a pale yellow crepe hem, and could cover a floor area of ten tatami mats. Everything about it was exquisite, from the large tassels in its four corners to the ceiling suspension loops, so the pawnbroker was very pleased with it.
- 十畳吊: Lit. "ten-tatami hanging". When suspended from the ceiling the net covered a floor area of ten tatami mats (roughly equivalent to 18 square meters).
- 萌黄地: Yellow-green fabric. 地 is the raw fabric—the material used in the making of the finished item.
- 縮緬: Crepe. Highly wrinkled silk, cotton, etc.
- 大房: Large tassels.
- 吊手: The cord by which a mosquito net, a curtain, etc. is suspended.
- 輪乳: The loops attached to the mosquito net, through which the suspension cord is threaded.
- から...に至るまで: Indicates complete coverage. From X to Y, including everything in between.
- 凝った: Exquisite, ornate, elaborate.
- 主翁: Store owner. The word ていしゅ is normally written 亭主.
- 気にいった: Pleased [someone] considerably. いった is 入った (entered).

The pawnbroker then bought the net for 15 ryō. Eizō had originally purchased it for 1.875 ryō, so he was overjoyed by this.
- 両: An old currency unit.
- 歩: An old currency unit, equal to 1/4 of a 両. Also written 分.
- 朱: An old currency unit, equal to 1/4 of a 歩 (or 1/16 of a 両). Also written 銖.
- 一両三歩二朱: One ryō, three bu, and two shu is the equivalent of 1.875 両. In other words, the pawnbroker bought the net from Eizō for a price eight times as high as what Eizō had originally paid for it.

The following morning, a messenger from Sanomata came to Eizō's house. Eizō, wondering what it was all about, went out and headed to the pawnshop.
- ところで: Used to change the subject and start a new stage in the story.
- 使: A messenger.

「旦那《だんな》、お使《つか》いをいただきまして」
"Sir, I received your messenger..."
- This sentence is spoken by Eizō to Sanomata. It is left unfinished because Eizō prompts Sanomata to explain why he sent the messenger.
- 旦那: A respectful form of address. Used toward a man who is perceived as being in a superior position relative to the speaker. Master, sir, etc.

- 養老しぼり: A type of dyeing technique for kimono. The fabric is creased vertically and dyed in a vertically-oriented pattern.

- The money is the price that the pawnbroker paid Eizō for the net. He is now returning it without asking for the money back, because he is eager to get rid of it as soon as possible.

With these words, Eizō was given back the mosquito net.
- 返された: The passive is from Eizō's point of view. This is an example of the "adverse passive", where something undesirable is inflicted on one person by another.

- 小姓: A pageboy, a boy who served as a helper in a samurai household.
