It was in September 1st of last year that I moved into this area—the remote part of Mitaka.
- 三鷹: A city located immediately to the west of Tokyo. It is now included in Tokyo Metropolis (東京都) and borders Suginami Ward.
▼
その前は、甲府の町はずれに家を借りて住んでいたのである。
その前《まえ》は、甲府《こうふ》の町《まち》はずれに家《いえ》を借《か》りて住《す》んでいたのである。
Before that, I had lived in a house that I had rented in the outskirts of Kōfu.
- 甲府: The capital of Yamanashi Prefecture, further to the west of Tokyo.
- 町はずれ: The outskirts of a town. はずれ (外れ) means outskirts, somewhere away from the center of a place.
▼
その家のひとつきの家賃は、六円五十銭であった。
その家《いえ》のひとつきの家賃《やちん》は、六円五十銭《ろくえんごじゅっせん》であった。
The monthly rent at that house was six yen and fifty sen.
- The figure given here is according to the prewar currency system, in which the yen was further subdivided into smaller monetary units. A 銭 was 1/100 of a yen. 六円五十銭 is therefore 6.5 yen. As these numbers show, the historical yen had a far greater value than the modern currency of the same name; even one yen was a considerable sum of money.

又その前は、甲州御坂峠の頂上の、茶店の二階を借りて住んでいたのである。
又《また》その前《まえ》は、甲州《こうしゅう》御坂峠《みさかとうげ》の頂上《ちょうじょう》の、茶店《ちゃみせ》の二階《にかい》を借《か》りて住《す》んでいたのである。
And before that, I rented and lived on the second floor of a tea house located at the top of the Misaka Pass.
- 甲州: A city in Yamanashi Prefecture, directly to the north of Mount Fuji.
- 御坂峠: A famous mountain pass with a beautiful vista of Mount Fuji.
▼
更にその前は、荻窪の最下等の下宿屋の一室を借りて住んでいたのである。
更《さら》にその前《まえ》は、荻窪《おぎくぼ》の最下等《さいかとう》の下宿屋《げしゅくや》の一室《いっしつ》を借《か》りて住《す》んでいたのである。
Earlier still, I lived in a rented room in Ogikubo's most inferior boardinghouse.
- 荻窪: An area in western Tokyo, crossed by the Chūō Line. Now part of Suginami Ward.
▼
更にその前は、千葉県、船橋の町はずれに、二十四円の家を借りて住んでいたのである。
更《さら》にその前《まえ》は、千葉県《ちばけん》、船橋《ふなばし》の町《まち》はずれに、二十四円《にじゅうよえん》の家《いえ》を借《か》りて住《す》んでいたのである。
And even earlier than that, I lived in the outskirts of Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, where I resided in a house that I rented for 24 yen per month.
- 船橋: A city in western Chiba Prefecture, to the east of Tokyo.

No matter where I live, it's all the same thing. I don't have any particularly strong feeling about it.
- 格別: Particular, special, noteworthy.

Even with regard to my current house in Mitaka, although visiting guests kindly share with me their various impressions of this place, I always react with extremely perfunctory nods and interjections.
- 甚だ: Extremely, exceedingly.
- いい加減: Perfunctory, halfhearted, vague, etc.
- 合槌: More commonly written 相槌. A general term for the various signals that the Japanese use in conversation to express attentiveness. While someone speaks, the listener throws in short interjections, nods, and other signals that indicate positive attitude and understanding of what the speaker is saying. The expression あいづちを打つ means "to throw in あいづち where appropriate", i.e., to give those signals at the moments where they are required. あいづち signals are generally given whenever there is a natural opportunity to do so: in pauses between sentences, when the speaker says something important, etc.

どうでも、いい事《こと》ではないか。私《わたし》は、衣食住《いしょくじゅう》に就《つ》いては、全《まった》く趣味《しゅみ》が無《な》い。
It makes no difference anyway, does it? For my part, when it comes to the basic necessities— clothing, food, and housing—I have absolutely no preference.
- どうでも、いい: The comma is the writer's stylistic choice and does not change the meaning. This expression is usually written as a single unit, どうでもいい.
- 衣食住: Clothing, food, and housing. The three basic necessities of human life.
- 趣味: Taste, preference, a particular liking to something.

People who make a huge fuss over clothes, food, and houses with a self-congratulatory face—I don't know why, but I can't help seeing them as outrageously ridiculous.
- 凝って: The verb 凝る means "to be crazy [about something]", "to make a fuss", "to be obsessed", etc.
- どうしてだか: Lit. "why". This question is used rhetorically and modifies what follows it, in the sense of "I wonder why", "for some mysterious reason".
- 滑稽: Ridiculous, absurd.
- 見えて仕様が無い: Lit. "unavoidably look [in a certain way]". When it follows the te-form, 仕様が無い indicates that the verb is uncontrollable, unavoidable, etc., as suggested by the expression's literal meaning of "nothing can be done".
