Bashō is Bashō, Ryōkan is Ryōkan; even if I were to try to turn into Bashō I could never fully become him, and even if I imitated Ryōkan it would not amount to anything.

I am me, Santōka is Santōka; I neither intend to become Bashō, nor is he someone I can become in the first place; when someone who is not Ryōkan acts in a Ryōkan-like manner it desecrates Ryōkan, and at the same time harms that person himself.

酒を飲むよりも水を飲む、酒を飲まずにはいられない私の現在ではあるが、酒を飲むように水を飲む、いや、水を飲むように酒を飲む、――こういう境地でありたい。

Drinking less alcohol and more water; as things now stand, I can't help but drink alcohol, but I would like to achieve the state of mind where I drink water like I drink alcohol; no, I mean, drink alcohol like I drink water.

New Year thoughts:
- 所感: Thoughts, impressions, feelings. Lit. "that which one feels".

芭蕉《ばしょう》は芭蕉《ばしょう》、良寛《りょうかん》は良寛《 りょうかん 》である、芭蕉《ばしょう》になろうとしても芭蕉《ばしょう》にはなりきれないし、良寛《りょうかん》の真似《まね》をしたところで初《はじ》まらない。
Bashō is Bashō, Ryōkan is Ryōkan; even if I were to try to turn into Bashō I could never fully become him, and even if I imitated Ryōkan it would not amount to anything.
- Santōka, the writer of this text, was a haiku poet and Zen ascetic who dedicated himself to groundbreaking and highly individualistic poetry. He is one of the representative figures in the genre of free-verse haiku, which broke free of haiku's strict conventions in order to better express its poetic essence.
- 芭蕉: Matsuo Bashō (松尾芭蕉, 1644-1694) is considered the greatest haiku poet, and his work has traditionally been the standard point of reference for all poets in this genre.
- 良寛: Another famous poet, who was also a Zen monk like Santōka. Lived from 1758 to 1831.
- である: Covers both of the "XはY" phrases that precede it. The meaning is identical to 芭蕉は芭蕉であり、良寛は良寛である, but であり was dropped to avoid the repetition.
- Note that while である is followed by a comma, it should be read as a sentence-ending verb and does not grammatically connect to the following noun. The writer conventionally uses a comma instead of a full stop to give the feeling that individual sentences rapidly follow each other, as if they were spoken. He uses the regular full stop when concluding a certain idea or when a more substantial pause between sentences is needed.
- なりきれない: Lit. "cannot become all the way through".
- 真似をしたところで: Even if [one] imitates. The expression ~たところで marks ineffectual actions.
- 初まらない: An idiomatic use of the verb はじまる. When following contrastive conjunctions, it means "pointless, not going anywhere, amounts to nothing" etc.
- Each statement about one of the poets also applies to the other: the structure of the sentences is rhetorical, with Bashō and Ryōkan being interchangeable. This is also the case in the next sentence.

Walking, drinking, composing: these are Santōka's Three Essentials.
- 三つ物: A term used in numerous fields and practices in the sense of "the three essential things". For example, a samurai's 三つ物 are the three main parts of his body armor: the breastplate, the arm plates, and the helmet. In haiku, this expression indicates the three lines that form the poem.

Drinking less alcohol and more water; as things now stand, I can't help but drink alcohol, but I would like to achieve the state of mind where I drink water like I drink alcohol; no, I mean, drink alcohol like I drink water.
- Santōka was a heavy drinker. His diaries describe his long battle with alcoholism, from which he constantly, but unsuccessfully, tried to break free. Judging from his other writings, here he seems to have expressed his desire to change his attitude toward alcohol so that he might start drinking it in moderation.
- いや: Lit. "no". Used in mid-sentence when rephrasing or correcting what one has just said.
- でありたい: Want to be (to be in a certain state or have a certain quality).

Composing means, of course, composing haiku; and it also means I want to write freestyle essays.
- 随筆: A traditional Japanese genre of essays on miscellaneous topics, which are written in a fragmentary, associative style and describe the writer's impressions and thoughts as they come to mind.
