ペン先がインキにこう言いました。
ペン先《さき》がインキにこう言《い》いました。
The nib of a certain pen said these words to the ink.
- ペン先: A fountain pen nib. Lit. "pen-tip".
- こう言いました: Lit. "said thus". The word こう introduces the spoken sentences that follow.
▼
「お前位イヤなものはない。
「お前《まえ》位《ぐらい》イヤなものはない。
"There's nothing I detest as much as I detest you.
- お前: An informal masculine form of address to another male who is a peer of the speaker or a person of lower status.
- イヤ: Intolerable, detestable, an object of dislike.
▼
私がいくら金の衣服を着ていても、お前はすぐに錆さして役に立たなくしてしまう。
私《わたし》がいくら金《きん》の衣服《いふく》を着《き》ていても、お前《まえ》はすぐに錆《さび》さして役《やく》に立《た》たなくしてしまう。
No matter how much I bother wearing golden garments, you still immediately cause me to rust and make me useless.
- 金の衣服: A metaphor for the nib's golden-colored plating.
- 錆さして: The orthography chosen by the writer makes it difficult to see the elements of this word. It is actually the verb さびる (錆びる), "to rust", in a causative conjugation that uses the auxiliary さす, which is identical in meaning more common causative auxiliary させる.
- 役に立たなくして: A construction that turns the intransitive expression 役に立つ, "to be useful", into a transitive and negative expression. 役に立たない, "to be useless", is made transitive by attaching the verb する to the negative adjective ない.
▼
私はお前みたいなもの大嫌いさ」
私《わたし》はお前《まえ》みたいなもの大嫌《だいきら》いさ」
As far as I'm concerned, fellows like you are absolutely loathsome."
- さ: A final particle that carries the tone of a relaxed, nonchalant assertion. The speaker here is not showing anger, but coolly states his loathing for the ink.

▼
「ペンは錆るのが役目じゃない。
「ペンは錆《さび》るのが役目《やくめ》じゃない。
"For a pen, rusting isn't the mission in life.
- The emphasis here and in the next sentence is on the word marked with が. The idea is that contrary to what the listener (the pen) thinks, the emphasized word is actually not the true mission or calling.
▼
インキはなくなるのがつとめじゃない。
For ink, running out isn't the true calling.
▼
一緒になって字を書くのが役目さ。
一緒《いっしょ》になって字《じ》を書《か》くのが役目《やくめ》さ。

錆《さび》るのがイヤなら鉄《てつ》に生《う》まれて来《こ》ない方《ほう》がいいじゃないか。
If someone doesn't like rusting, it would be wiser for him not be born as iron, now wouldn't it?
- じゃないか: A forceful rhetorical question, turning the preceding sentence into a somewhat agitated assertion.
▼
インキがイヤなら何だってペンに生まれて来たんだえ」
インキがイヤなら何《なん》だってペンに生《う》まれて来《き》たんだえ」
If you detest ink, then how come you were born as a pen?"
- 何だって: Why, how come. An informal equivalent of なんで.
- 来たんだえ = 来たのだい. The final particle だえ (a slurred form of だい) is an informal, masculine marker of WH-questions.
