As soon as it spotted a small flying insect, the pigeon immediately swooped down from the roof into the yard and caught it.
羽虫: A general term for small flying insects. Lit. "winged insect".
- ~がはやいか: As soon as ~.

あわや、嘴《くちばし》が近《ちかづ》こうとすると羽虫《はむし》が「ちょっと待《ま》って」と言《い》いました。
When the pigeon's beak was on the verge of closing in on the flying insect, the insect said: "Wait a second".
- あわや: An adverb that means "on the brink, on the verge" of an event that is about to take place.
▼
「何か用かえ」
「何《なに》か用《よう》かえ」
"Is there anything you want from me?"
- This sentence is spoken by the pigeon.
- 用: Business, something that needs to be done or taken care of.
- かえ = かい. An informal yes-no question marker, slurred to produce an even rougher tone.
▼
「ええ」
"Yeah."
▼
「どんな用だえ。聴いてやるがら言って見たらよかろう」
「どんな用《よう》だえ。聴《き》いてやるがら言《ゆ》って見《み》たらよかろう」
"What is it? I'll do you a favor and listen, so you might as well say it."
- だえ = だい. An informal WH question marker. This too is slurred to produce a rough masculine tone.
- がら: A rough masculine variant of から. The か becomes voiced in slurred speech.
- 言って: The pronunciation of 言う as ゆう, including in the verb's conjugations, is a feature of Western Japanese dialects.
- よかろう: The presumptive form of よい (いい), which is identical to the combination よい + だろう. The phrase 言って見たらよかろう gives an unenthusiastic nuance ("you might as well say") to the basic suggestion phrase 言って見たらいい ("you should say").

羽虫《はむし》はくるしい爪《つめ》の下《した》で、いい渋《しぶ》っていましたが思《おも》い切《き》って
The flying insect, under the crushing claws, hesitated to speak out; but then it mustered up its courage and said:
- いい渋っていました: The verb 言い渋る means "to hesitate to speak". 渋る on its own means "to hesitate", "to be reluctant".
▼
「あのう……世間では、あなたのことを愛の天使だの、平和の表徴だのって言っているんです」
「あのう……世間《せけん》では、あなたのことを愛《あい》の天使《みつかい》だの、平和《へいわ》の表徴《シンボル》だのって言《ゆ》っているんです」
"Um... The thing is, people always describe you as a heavenly messenger of love, or as a symbol of peace—stuff like that."
- 天使: The word itself means "angel", in the sense of "heavenly messenger". The writer's chosen reading, みつかい, means "noble messenger".
- 表徴: The writer uses the loanword シンボル as the reading of this compound, whose normal reading is しょうちょう. The meaning is identical.
- だの...だの: This construction gives representative examples of things that people said. It implies a critical attitude toward the paraphrased content, which is seen as inappropriate, inaccurate, nagging, etc.
▼
「そして」
"And?"
▼
「それだのにあなたは今、何の罪もない私の生命を取ろうとしている」
「それだのにあなたは今《いま》、何《なん》の罪《つみ》もない私《わたし》の生命《いのち》を取《と》ろうとしている」
"In spite of that, you are now about to take my life—although I have done absolutely nothing wrong."
- それだのに = それなのに.
- 生命: The normal reading is せいめい. The meaning is largely synonymous with the writer's chosen reading in this case, いのち.
▼
「それから」
"Then?"
▼
「それは無法というものです」
「それは無法《むほう》というものです」
"That's a very unfair thing to do."

それが万物の生きている証拠さ」
それが万物《ばんぶつ》の生《い》きている証拠《しょうこ》さ」
"After all, this is the very proof that all the things in the universe are alive."
- 万物: All the things in the universe. The idea that everything in the universe is ultimately equal and part of an ever-changing flux is grounded in Buddhist thought. The pigeon is basically telling the insect that there is no problem, since each of them is merely performing its required role in the cosmic order.
- さ: A sentence-final particle that conveys the tone of a casual, relaxed assertion.
