On the outskirts of a certain town, he was playing tag with her—a younger girl.

- 裏: Literally "the back" of the town. A vague expression indicating anywhere on the edge of town, whether within the built-up area or outside it.
- 鬼ごっこ: Tag, the universal children's game in which one player chases the rest and tries to touch them. In Japanese the chasing player is called 鬼, "demon".

- 街燈 = 街灯.
- 瓦斯: This is the loanword ガス as spelled in ateji (phonetic spelling that ignores the characters' meanings and uses them exclusively for their sounds). Up to the postwar period it was common to spell loanwords in ateji using kanji, whereas the current practice is to use katakana.
- ともる = 灯る, 点る. To burn, be lit. The intransitive counterpart of ともす.

- たった = 経った. Passed, elapsed.
- 雪国: Literally "snow provinces". Usually refers to the provinces (later prefectures) in the Hokuriku region, which are known for heavy snowfall.
- 汽車: Literally "steam train". This was the generic word for train in the era of steam locomotives.
- めぐり合った: The verb めぐりあう means "to come across someone [again]". The adverb 偶然 reinforces the unexpectedness of this encounter.
