A pocket watch fell behind a cupboard and lay there ticking all alone.
- チクタク: Ticktock. The ticking sound of the watch.
- 動いて: The verb 動く is a catch-all word that signifies many different types of moving, working, etc. It needs to be translated according to context. In this case it means "to tick".
- おりました: The use of ておる rather than ている does not necessarily signify humble language. Here it simply gives the text a somewhat formal, neutral tone.

「馬鹿《ばか》だなあ。誰《だれ》も見《み》る者《もの》はないのに、何《なん》だって動《うご》いているんだえ」
"You are so silly! No one sees you here, so why the hell do you keep moving anyway?"
- 何だって: Why, for what reason. A contraction of 何だといって, literally “saying what [as a reason]".
- んだえ = のだい: A marker of WH questions in rough, masculine speech. Here slurred into an even more informal form.
▼
「人の見ない時でも動いているから、いつ見られても役に立つのさ」
「人《ひと》の見《み》ない時《とき》でも動《うご》いているから、いつ見《み》られても役《やく》に立《た》つのさ」
"It's precisely because I move even when others aren't looking that I can serve my purpose whenever I'm looked at, you know,"
- 人: Besides meaning "people", this has the more specific meaning of "others", i.e., third parties who are neither the speaker nor the listener.
- のさ: The final particle さ is used when conveying new information to the listener in a relaxed, self-assured tone. Here it follows の (whose function it complements) with the だ dropped. Without さ, the sentence would likely have ended with のだ.
