A lone servant was waiting under Rashōmon Gate for the rain to stop.
- 羅生門: The main gate of the ancient capital Heian-kyō (now called Kyoto). It was located at the southern end of Suzaku Avenue (朱雀大路), the city's main south-north axis. The gate's name has the alternative pronunciation らじょうもん and alternative written form 羅城門.

Given Rashōmon Gate's location on Suzaku Avenue, one would expect there to have been at least two or three other people using this spot to take shelter from the rain, wearing their ichimegasa or momieboshi hats.
- 雨やみ: Besides its meaning of "the stopping of rain" (which was used in sentence 2 above), this word also means "taking shelter from the rain". This is why it is joined to the verb する here.
- 市女笠: A wide-brimmed hat that often had a long semi-transparent veil attached to it. It was used by the higher classes of both sexes, but most typically by women, while outside their residences.
- 揉烏帽子: A type of elongated headgear used by male nobles in the imperial court.
- The hat names are used as a metonymy: they represent the people wearing them. Each hat name seems to stand for females and males, respectively.
- The meaning of "at least" is suggested by the approximation 二三人 (two or three people) in combination with は.

それが、この男のほかには誰もいない。
それが、この男《おとこ》のほかには誰《だれ》もいない。
Yet besides this man there was no one around.

そこで洛中《らくちゅう》のさびれ方《かた》は一通《ひととお》りではない。
And the pattern of decline was not uniform across the capital.
- 洛中: Throughout the capital, the whole capital. 洛陽 (らくよう) is another name for Kyoto, in imitation of the historical Chinese capital of Luòyáng, whose name is written with the same characters. The character 洛 is still commonly used in modern contexts as an elegant abbreviation for Kyoto.
- さびれ方: The verb さびれる (寂れる) + the suffix 方 "way, manner" etc.
- This line is related to the historical fact that the western half of the capital (west of Suzaku Avenue) suffered from decline and depopulation, while the eastern half continued to flourish.

広い門の下には、この男のほかに誰もいない。ただ、所々|丹塗《にぬり》の剥《は》げた、大きな円柱《まるばしら》に、蟋蟀《きりぎりす》が一匹とまっている。羅生門が、朱雀大路《すざくおおじ》にある以上は、この男のほかにも、雨やみをする市女笠《いちめがさ》や揉烏帽子《もみえぼし》が、もう二三人はありそうなものである。それが、この男のほかには誰もいない。
