This is a description of one of the places that Akutagawa saw on his visit to the famous historical and religious site of 日光 (にっこう).
- 年をとった: Elderly. The idiom 年をとる means "to grow old".
- 巫女: A shrine maiden, a priestess who performs various religious duties at a Shinto shrine. A miko is usually a young, unmarried virgin, but there are also older priestesses.
- 白い衣に緋の袴: This usage of に is common in descriptions of what a person is wearing. It marks one item of clothing and links it to others that are worn as part of the same set.
- 緋: Scarlet. Bright red.
- 袴: Traditional wide trousers that are tied high on the waist. Shinto shrine maidens wear scarlet hakama over a pure white robe.
- 御簾: A blind made from reed, bamboo, etc., which provides shade and partly hides spaces from view.
- 陰: Lit. "shadow". The miko was sitting on the shaded inner side of the blind.

I have once seen two young miko in Kasuga Forest in the early evening, when it appeared like a winter shower was about to start.
- 時雨もよい: This is a single noun created by compounding a regular noun and a suffix. 時雨 refers to a light shower accompanied by wind in late autumn or early winter. The suffix もよい (催い) means an indication, sign, etc. that the preceding noun is about to take place. 時雨もよい means that the sky is cloudy in a way that possibly indicates that a shower is imminent.
- 春日の森: The primeval forest surrounding Kasuga Taisha, a major Shinto shrine in Nara.

二人《ふたり》とも十二《にじゅう》、三《さん》でやはり緋《ひ》の袴《はかま》に白《しろ》い衣《ころも》をきて白粉《おしろい》をつけていた。
Both were about twenty-two or twenty-three and likewise wore scarlet hakama and white robes, with white makeup covering their faces.
- Note how the order of the clothing items used with に is the opposite of the previous example, without changing the meaning.

In the shady half-light under the cedar trees, dim white smoke was rising from the burning of fallen leaves; the air in the forest, humid with heavy moisture, filled everything with an indefinable stillness in which even the whispers of the tree spirits might have been audible.
- 落葉をたく: Burning fallen leaves is a common method of disposing of them. たく (焚く) means "to burn".
- ほの白く: Lit. "in a dim-white manner".
- 木精: The spirits that live in trees, according to Japanese tradition. Also called 木霊 (こだま).
- 言いがたい: Lit. "hard to say". Indefinable, indescribable.
- 漂せた: Lit. "make drift". The air of the forest makes the stillness permeate everything.

How curious I found the receding figures of those young—or more precisely, childlike—miko quietly walking past me on that serene forest trail.
- もの静か: Having a quiet, serene manner or atmosphere.
- ゆきちがった = 行き違った. Walked past [me].
- 後ろ姿: Receding figure. The sight of someone from behind as he moves away from the viewer.
- どんなにか: How, to what extent. Here used in an exclamatory sense.
- 覚えたろう = 覚えただろう. The ~ろう part corresponds to the どんなにか to create an exclamation.

But now, when I saw the old miko sitting forlornly in a shady spot of the shrine as the cool air of the valley cast a chill over everything, I could not help feeling sadness creeping up on me.
- 山懐: An isolated valley, an area closely surrounded by mountains.
- 肌寒く迫ってくる: Lit. "pressing chillingly", i.e., casting a chill.
- 片かげ: A shady spot.
- そぞろに: Involuntarily, despite oneself. The feeling creeps up on the writer without his understanding exactly why he feels this way.
