Miss Cat was taking a stroll.
- おねこさん: The suffix さん creates a friendly, "cute" tone suitable for a children's story. The お in おねこ mimics a woman's name (in Japan, many such names traditionally started with お).

A gust of wind suddenly came, and Miss Cat's shawl was blown off her shoulders. The shawl fell into the stream.
- かたかけ: A shawl, wrapped around the shoulders to keep warm. Lit. "shoulder-cover".
- かたかけは川の中へ: Lit. "the shawl—into the stream". There is no verb, since the meaning is understood from the context. This is an example of how Japanese can omit even verbs (normally considered the most indispensable part of a sentence) when they are felt to be redundant.

Mr. Dog said: "In this kind of cold, I can't take it out. Let's wait until summer."
- さむくちゃあ: さむくちゃ is a contraction of さむくては, which indicates an adverse condition or circumstance. The final あ is an emphatic lengthening of ちゃ that expresses surprise, dismay, etc.
- 待とう: The dog uses plain verb forms, which give his speech a masculine tone. The cat on the other hand uses polite forms, which are associated with feminine speech. The two characters are supposed to be a female cat and a male dog.

The two of them were so happy that they headed home without even thanking him.
- あんまり: A spoken, emphatic form of あまり.
- あんまりうれしくて: This construction means "so ~ that", i.e., something is done to an excessive degree and this causes a certain result, usually one that is undesirable.
- おれい = お礼. Politeness, courtesy. The expression 礼を言う means "to thank, to express gratitude" in situations where the social norm requires it.
