Every day, Yotarō would go to play in the neighboring village, and before dark he would come back walking through the forest.
- 日の: The particle の marks the subject, like が.
- 暮れぬうちに: ぬ is a literary form of the negative element ない. The literal meaning of ~ぬうちに is "as long as ~ hasn't taken place yet", i.e., "before ~ happens".
▼

「あの森 《もり》は狸 《たぬき》がいていろいろのものに化 《ば》けるから、日 《ひ》の暮 《く》れぬうちに帰 《かえ》らぬと怖 《おそ》ろしいぞ」
"There are tanuki in that forest and they change their shape into all kinds of things, so if you don't come back before it gets dark, terrible things will happen!"
- 狸: Tanuki, raccoon dog (see in the cover illustration). An animal that looks similar to a badger, but the two species are unrelated. In Japanese folklore, Tanuki are considered to be ghosts or supernatural beings (yōkai, 妖怪) that can morph into different shapes and like to trick humans.
- ぞ: Marks a forceful, self-confident assertion. Normally used by men, but here by a woman.
▼
とお母さんが言いきかせているからです。
とお母《かあ》さんが言《い》いきかせているからです。
This is what his mother would always tell him; that's why he did it.
- 言いきかせている = 言い聞かせている. Literally "to tell and make someone listen".
- This sentence ends with からです because the mother's words are given as the background to the opening sentence.
▼
ある日、与太郎はうっかり遊び過ごして真暗になって帰って来ました。森の中に入ると、忽ち一丈もある位の一つ目入道が出ました。
ある日《ひ》、与太郎《よたろう》はうっかり遊《あそ》び過《す》ごして真暗《まっくら》になって帰《かえ》って来《き》ました。森《もり》の中《なか》に入ると、忽《たちま》ち一丈《いちじょう》もある位《くらい》の一つ目入道《ひとつめにゅうどう》が出《で》ました。
One day, Yotarō inadvertently spent too much time playing and only headed back after it had become completely dark. As soon as he entered the forest, a One-Eyed Monk who was as much as three meters tall suddenly appeared in front of him.
- うっかり: Inadvertently, carelessly, without thinking.
- 過ごして: The auxiliary verb 過ごす means "to do [the main verb] beyond a reasonable limit, to overdo". It is attached to the connective form of the main verb, which here is 遊ぶ (in the form of 遊び).
- 真暗: More usually written 真っ暗.
- 丈: An archaic unit of length, equivalent to about 3.03 meters.
- 一つ目入道: A yōkai in Japanese folklore. Has the appearance of a one-eyed Buddhist monk (入道, literally "one who has entered the [Buddhist] path").
▼
「ヤア。大きな伯父さんが出て来た。眼玉が一つしかないんだね。面白いなあ。僕と一緒にうちへ遊びに来ないかい」
「ヤア。大《おお》きな伯父《おじ》さんが出《で》て来《き》た。眼玉《めだま》が一《ひと》つしかないんだね。面白《おもしろ》いなあ。僕《ぼく》と一緒《いっしょ》にうちへ遊《あそ》びに来《こ》ないかい」
"Wow! A big mister popped up here. And he only has one eye! How fun! Wanna go back to my house with me and play together?"
- 伯父さん: The word おじさん means both "uncle" and "adult man". Here the kanji spelling suggests the first meaning, but the intended one is the second.
- 眼玉 = 目玉. Literally "eyeball". This word is used by the child because it is a more vivid and direct reference to the physical eye than just saying 目.
- 来ないかい: かい is an informal marker of yes-no questions. When preceded by a negative verb, the question becomes an invitation.

と与太郎《よたろう》は言《い》いました。一つ目入道《ひとつめにゅうどう》は見《み》ているうちにロクロ首《くび》になりました。
Said Yotarō. Then, right in front of his eyes, the One-Eyed Monk turned into a Rope Neck.
- 見ているうちに: Literally "while looking".
- ロクロ首: Another type of yōkai. Looks like a young woman with a neck that can extend to great lengths, sending the head away from from the body like a human-headed snake. The kanji spelling is 轆轤首. The word ろくろ can mean either a lathe, a potter's wheel (both of which operated by pulling a rope), or a pulley (for lifting the bucket from a water well). The exact origin of the yōkai's name is undetermined, so it was translated here as "Rope Neck".
▼
「ヤア。綺麗な首の長い姉さんになった。変だなあ。どうしてそんなに長くなるの。もっともっと長くして御覧」
「ヤア。綺麗《きれい》な首《くび》の長《なが》い姉《おねえ》さんになった。変《へん》だなあ。どうしてそんなに長《なが》くなるの。もっともっと長《なが》くして御覧《ごらん》」
"Wow! He turned into a pretty lady with a long neck. So strange! How come it can get so long? Hey, make it a lot, lot longer, please!"
- 姉さん: Means both "older sister" and "young lady".
- 長くして: From 長くする, "make long, extend, stretch".
- 御覧: A marker of respectful request. Although this word is originally a noun, it can end a sentence when attached to a te-form verb.
▼

「オヤ、鬼《おに》になった。お節句《せっく》の人形《にんぎょう》によく似《に》てる。可笑《おか》しいなあ。もっといろんなものになって御覧《ごらん》」
"Wow, she turned into a demon! It looks just like the dolls on Boys' Festival. How funny! Hey, turn into all kinds of other things too!"
- お節句の人形: The word お節句 can mean any of the traditional Japanese seasonal festivals, which are held on the day of the month that matches the month's own number. In this case the reference is to the Boys' Festival, held on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the traditional calendar (now celebrated as Children's Day on May 5th). One of the traditional customs related to this festival is to display dolls shaped like samurais in military gear and warriors in traditional dress.
- 似てる: The informal form of 似ている. The い is dropped in casual speech.

化け物は与太郎がちっとも怖がらないのでつまらなくなって、狸になってしまいました。
化《ば》け物《もの》は与太郎《よたろう》がちっとも怖《こわ》がらないのでつまらなくなって、狸《たぬき》になってしまいました。
The shape-shifter saw that Yotarō wasn't afraid in the least, so it lost interest and finally turned back into a tanuki.
- ちっとも: Not in the least (in negative expressions).
- 怖がらない: The adjective 怖い + the suffix がる, which is used to speak of someone's feelings as they appear to another person.
▼
それを見ると与太郎は真青になって、
それを見《み》ると与太郎《よたろう》は真青《まさお》になって、
When he saw that, Yotarō went deathly pale;
- 真青: Also 真っ青 (まっさお). Note the さ sound in both versions of the word, which is inserted to ease pronunciation.
▼
「ワア狸が出たあ。化けると大変だ。助けてくれ」
「ワア狸《たぬき》が出《で》たあ。化《ば》けると大変《たいへん》だ。助《たす》けてくれ」
"Oh no, it's a tanuki!!! If it changes shape I'm in big trouble! Help!"
- 出たあ: The last vowel is lengthened to give the effect of shouted speech.
- くれ: The informal, less respectful version of ください. Given the circumstances where "help" is normally used, formality and politeness become irrelevant, so like here, 助けてくれ is the more common form.
▼
と言いながら一所懸命逃げて行きました。
と言《い》いながら一所懸命《いっしょうけんめい》逃《に》げて行《い》きました。
Having said this, he ran away as fast he could.
- 言いながら: Literally "while saying", but in this context the more natural interpretation is that of time sequence.
