In a Kannon temple on top of a cliff there was a teahouse.
- 観音様: Kannon, a Buddhist deity, is a very popular object of worship in Japan. When followed by 様 the name may refer either to Kannon herself or, as here, to a dedicated Buddhist temple where her image is enshrined.

It was run by an old woman who had undergone many hardships in her life. She offered a selection of items such as oranges, eggs, and cheap sweets, and satisfied the visitors' thirst with strong tea.
- 駄菓子: Cheap candy.
- なんど: A variant of など.
- 参詣者: Normally read さんけいしゃ. The reading used in the story, おまいりびと, is actually a separate colloquial word that has the same meaning (a visitor to a temple or shrine).
- 咽喉: Normally read いんこう but here given the reading のど, which is the colloquial equivalent expressing the same meaning (throat).
- 苦労しぬいて: Lit. "having undergone hardships all the way". ぬく is an auxiliary indicating the subject's complete passage through something.

One day, a mother sparrow came to the storefront and respectfully thanked the old woman: "Every time my children come here you take care of them so well."
- 一わ: One (bird). わ is 羽, the counter word for birds.
- 親雀: Lit. "parent-sparrow". A sparrow with small chicks. Translated here as "mother sparrow" based on the context, but may technically be of either sex.
- 等: A plural suffix. Somewhat informal and humble.
- きては: One of the functions of a verb in the te-form that is followed by は is to indicate a repetitive sequence of cause and effect: every time X happens, Y happens too.
- お礼をのべました: The past form of an idiom that means "to thank someone", "to express gratitude" (usually in socially-required circumstances).

Having heard this, a little sparrow chick who was standing next to his mother said: "But even this morning we got rice from you!"
- 側についてきていた: Lit. "who had come along [with her] and was now standing by [her] side".
- 頂いてよ: An unfinished sentence ending in a te-form is common in the spoken language, usually when its content supports or complements an earlier part of the conversation. Here it is understood as offering a factual justification of what the mother sparrow said.

「私《わたし》に、そんなおぼえは無《な》い」

Indeed, that old woman could barely make ends meet; but she was an upright person, and moreover, would never let anything go to waste.
- The idiom 煙を立てる means "to live, make a living" (with regard to a person's livelihood and everyday activities, as expressed by the Japanese term 生活). The literal meaning, "to raise smoke", refers to the smoke rising from a house's chimney as its inhabitants go about their daily routine.
- When ほそい is added to the above idiom, it adds the meaning of "scanty livelihood, living in poverty", etc.
- The construction こそ...が combines concessive and contrastive functions. It admits the existence of some aspect of a situation and then brings up another aspect that stands in contrast to the first. "While X is indeed…, Y is also true".
- としより: An elderly person. 年寄り.

それで、パン屑《くず》や米粒《こめつぶ》がよく雀《すずめ》らへのおあいそにもなったのでした。
That is why leftover bread crumbs or rice grains would often end up as a treat for the sparrows.
- おあいそ = お愛想. A treat, something given to someone to make them happy.
- When read with the previous sentence, this sentence seems to suggest that the old woman did not consciously make an effort to feed the sparrows, as she was too poor and had no food to spare. She did not think of the crumbs or grains as any special treat but simply gave them to the sparrows because the leftovers had no other use. Another possibility is that the sparrows availed themselves of leftovers that happened to fall on the ground, without her noticing it.

- This usage of こと is a common pattern for introducing a new event in a story. It indicates that something is about to be described for the first time in the following sentences.

こっそりとおばあさんのゆめに雀がしのびこんで来て、そして遠くの遠くの竹藪の、自分等の雀のお宿につれて行っておばあさんをあつくあつく饗応したということです。

The story goes that the sparrows quietly sneaked into the old woman's dreams; then they carried her with them to their sparrow abode in a bamboo grove far, far away, and warmly entertained her with the most lavish feast.
- こっそりと: Stealthily, quietly (so that nobody will notice).
- しのびこんで = 忍び込んで. To sneak in.
- 遠くの遠くの: The repetition intensifies the meaning. Both の are linked to the following noun (竹藪). The same pattern is used again below in あつくあつく.
- 饗応: Normally read きょうおう, but here used as part of the verb もてなす, which is the colloquial equivalent expressing the same meaning (to give someone a feast).
- ということです: An expression indicating hearsay. This part of the story is being told as if it was heard from an outside source, rather than personally known to be a fact.
