おじいさんは いなかに ひとりぼっちで くらして いました。
The old man lived all alone in the countryside.
- おじいさんは: The presence of は gives definiteness to the old man, as if speaking about a specific person who is already known. This is why it was translated with "the" above.
- ひとりぼっち: Being all alone, with no one around. Kanji spelling: 独りぼっち.
▼
だんだん みみが とおく なったので、みやこに いる むすこの ところへ、「みみが とおく なったから、よく きこえる きかいを かって おくって くれ。」と いって やりました。
His hearing gradually worsened, so he sent word to his son who lived in the big city, saying: "My hearing has become dull; please buy and send me a device that can help me hear well."
- みみが とおく: The idiom 耳が遠い, lit. "the ears are distant", means "to be hard of hearing, to have dull hearing", as if hearing things from a great distance.
- みやこ: Can refer either to the capital city or to any big city, as opposed to the countryside.
- きかい = 機械. Machine, device, apparatus.
- くれ: An informal equivalent of ください.
- やりました: The verb やる (遣る) means to dispatch, to send something or someone to a distant place.
▼
むすこは、いろいろ さがしたが、あまり よい きかいが ないので、らっぱを かって、「これを さかさまに して みみに つけて、らっぱの しりから ききなさい。」と いって やりました。
The son looked everywhere, but as none of the devices he found was particularly good, he bought a trumpet and sent it to the old man with a note: "Hold it backward against your ear, and listen through the back end of the trumpet."
- さかさまに して: Turn backward, invert.
- しり: The back end.
- The idea is that instead of listening to the trumpet bell (from which the trumpet's sound comes out), the old man would listen through the mouthpiece, which would normally be the wrong end. This is why it is described using the terms "backward" and "back end".
- ききなさい: The verb なさる is honorific toward the subject of the action, and its imperative form なさい also used to carry this honorific tone. Nowadays it is normally used by a superior to a person of lower status, but in this particular sentence it still has the older, respectful sense and is used by a son to his father.
▼
おじいさんは、その らっぱを よろこんで つかって いましたが、みみは どんどん とおく なって、とうとう つんぼに なりました。
The old man gladly started using the trumpet routinely, yet his hearing rapidly deteriorated, and in the end he became deaf.
- よろこんで: Gladly, with joy.
- つんぼ: Deaf, deafness. The kanji is 聾.
▼
それでも おじいさんは、「あの らっぱでは きこえなく なったから、もっと よく きこえるのを おくって くれ。」と むすこに てがみを やりました。
Nevertheless, he sent a letter to his son, saying: "I can no longer hear with that trumpet, so please send me another one that I can hear better with."
▼
むすこは いろいろ かんがえてから、また まえの らっぱと おなじ らっぱを おくって、「この らっぱを みみに つけると わたしの こえが きこえます。」と いって やりました。
After doing some thinking, the son sent the old man another trumpet that was identical to the first one, and wrote him: "If you hold this trumpet to your ear you will hear my voice."
▼
おじいさんは、その らっぱを みみに あてて みました。
The old man tried holding the trumpet to his ear.
▼
そして、「ああ きこえる きこえる、なつかしい むすこの こえが きこえる。」と いって よろこびました。
Then he was filled with joy, and said: "Ah, I can hear it, I can hear it, I can hear my son's good old voice."
▼
けれど それは、おじいさんの みみが きいたのでは ありません、こころが きいたのです。
But it was not the old man's ear that heard the voice; what actually heard it was his heart.
