A small handbag and a big handbag were on display side by side in a store. The big handbag always made fun of the small handbag, teasing it: "Someone like you can fit right into my mouth."
- 小さな鞄と大きな鞄と: The subject of the sentence, comprising two nouns joined together. The second と is used instead of marking the dual subject with が; it does not connect the second noun to the following word in the sentence.
- 二つ: Together, as a duo. Lit. "in two".
- おりました: A formal equivalent of the いました. The writer, Yumeno Kyūsaku, often prefers to use おる instead of いる in his stories. The verbs are identical in meaning, but the practice of using おる as a substitute for いる is more common in western Japan (Yumeno himself was a native of Fukuoka).
- 馬鹿にして: The idiom ばかにする can mean either an attitude (to look down on someone) or an action (to make fun of someone).
- なんぞ: A colloquial variant of など. Either expression can be attached to a noun to belittle it and convey the sense that it is unimportant, laughable, etc.
- The sentence in the quotation does not refer to any particular time of action, but states a fact that is always true.

二《ふた》つの鞄《かばん》は同《おな》じ時《とき》に同《おな》じ人《ひと》に買《か》われて、同《おな》じ家《いえ》に行《い》きました。

From then on the small handbag was always stuffed with money and various valuable items, and began to be carried around very carefully by the human.
- 何か貴いもの: Lit. "some valuable thing [or another]", meaning that every time the handbag was used, different items were put in it.
- 行きます: Indicates the beginning of a continuous trend. After the handbag begins to be used in a certain way, it keeps being used like this indefinitely.
▼
大きな鞄はあべこべにつまらないものばかり詰められて、荷車に積まれたり投げ飛ばされたりしておりました。
大《おお》きな鞄《かばん》はあべこべにつまらないものばかり詰《つ》められて、荷車《にぐるま》に積《つ》まれたり投《な》げ飛《と》ばされたりしておりました。
The big handbag, by contrast, kept getting stuffed full of worthless things and loaded onto carts or forcefully thrown around.
- あべこべに: By contrast. Indicates that the situation is the complete opposite of something else.
- ばかり: Marks a noun as being virtually the only one in existence in a certain context, to the exclusion of everything else: the worthless items were the only things that this handbag was ever used for holding.

小さな鞄は大威張りで、「大きな鞄の意気地なし」と笑っておりました。
小《ちい》さな鞄《かばん》は大威張《おおいば》りで、「大《おお》きな鞄《かばん》の意気地《いくじ》なし」と笑《わら》っておりました。
The small handbag, with great self-importance, always laughed at it: "Big handbag, you wimp!"
- 大威張りで: With great self-importance, with extreme haughtiness.
- 意気地なし: A noun that means "a wimp", "a spineless person", "a coward", etc. Here it is used as an insulting epithet and directed at the listener. 大きな鞄の functions as a descriptive noun that indicates the identity of the coward. Lit. "you big-handbag-wimp".
▼
大きな鞄は大層口惜しがって、自分をいじめる人間を怨んでおりました。
大《おお》きな鞄《かばん》は大層《たいそう》口惜《くちお》しがって、自分《じぶん》をいじめる人間《にんげん》を怨《うら》んでおりました。
The big handbag was greatly mortified, and resented the humans who mistreated it.

大《おお》きな鞄《かばん》はここで敵《かたき》を取《と》ってやろうと思《おも》って、火事《かじ》が済《す》んだあとで人《ひと》が開《あ》けようとすると、口《くち》をしっかりと閉《と》じて中《なか》の小《ちい》さな鞄《かばん》を出《だ》すまいとしました。
The big handbag intended to use this chance to get back at its enemy; after the fire had been put out, when the owner tried to open the big handbag, it firmly shut its mouth and refused to let the small handbag out.
- 敵を取ってやろうと思って: Lit. "intending to get back at [its] enemy". 敵を取る means to take revenge, to get back at an enemy or rival for something they did. The ~てやる construction is used in the sense of aggressively directing an action at someone else.
- 火事が済んだ: Lit. "the fire was finished". Can mean that the fire was put out (by someone), or that it died down (on its own). Here the likely interpretation is the former.
- 出すまいとしました: Lit. "made a determined effort not to let out". The suffix ~まい has a prohibitive function, indicating a strong determination to avoid performing a certain action. 出すまいとしました is the negative counterpart of 出そうとしました.

人間は大層困っていろいろやってみましたが、どうしても開きません。
人間《にんげん》は大層《たいそう》困《こま》っていろいろやってみましたが、どうしても開《あ》きません。
The human was greatly perplexed and tried all kinds of tricks, but no matter what he did, the handbag would not open.
- いろいろやってみました: Lit. "tried doing in a variety". いろいろ is often used vaguely, with the precise translation depending on the context.

「この鞄は駄目だよ。口を開かなきゃ鞄の役に立ちはしない。中の小さな鞄が入り用だからしかたがない。こうしてやろう」
「この鞄《かばん》は駄目《だめ》だよ。口《くち》を開《ひら》かなきゃ鞄《かばん》の役《やく》に立《た》ちはしない。中《なか》の小《ちい》さな鞄《かばん》が入《い》り用《よう》だからしかたがない。こうしてやろう」
"This handbag is no good! If it refuses to open, it can't possibly function as a handbag. It's the small handbag inside that I truly need right now, so I have no choice. This is what I'll do—"
- 口を開かなきゃ: Lit. "if it doesn't open its mouth", i.e., become open. ~なきゃ is a spoken variant of ~なければ.
- Note that the transitive verb used here for "opening" something is ひらく, whereas earlier it was あける. This can partly be explained by the fact that each verb is used in a different kind of context: あける describes an action that the person performs on the handbag, while ひらく describes an action that the handbag performs on itself. The verbs are also slightly different in nuance. あける is the one usually used for opening a bag or a mouth. ひらく has the more specialized sense of "spreading open" something, which fits the context of the handbag's refusal to open itself even a little.
- 鞄の役に立ちはしない: The expression Xの役に立つ means "to serve the function of X", "to be useful as an X". Here the expression is emphatically negated using a split negative construction of 立つ: the verb is conjugated into the connective form 立ち, and the particle は, which is used for emphasis, is inserted between it and しない (the negative of する). This split construction is standard whenever は or も are combined with a verb.
- 入り用: The necessary thing at the moment.

と言いながら横腹を切り破ってしまいました。
と言《い》いながら横腹《よこばら》を切《き》り破《やぶ》ってしまいました。
Having said this to himself, he finally cut the big handbag's side open.
- 切り破って: The verb きりやぶる means "to cut something open", "to rip something with a blade", etc.
