A certain young woman loved one man with all her heart. They got married; three years passed.
▼
But one day that young woman said: "Oh, it's suffocating, so suffocating! My dear one... You are so dear to me, but I'm suffocated here, and I feel like I can't breathe freely." Crying as she said this, she ran away from the man.

She indeed ran away, but it was not the case that there was another man with whom she had fallen in love. She returned to her parents' house, the place where she had been born.

そして、黙《だま》って、二粒《につぶ》の涙《なみだ》をこぼし、頭《あたま》を振《ふ》り、やがて寂《さび》しく微笑《ほほえ》んで縁側《えんがわ》に坐《すわ》った。
Then she silently shed two teardrops, shook her head, and finally smiled and sat all alone on the veranda.
▼
朝眼を覚すと、一日中、月の出る夜になっても、女は、いつも同じ縁の柱によって居る。
朝《あさ》眼《め》を覚《さま》すと、一日中《いちにちじゅう》、月《つき》の出《で》る夜《よる》になっても、女《おんな》は、いつも同《おな》じ縁《えん》の柱《はしら》によって居《い》る。
Starting as soon as she woke up in the morning, the woman spent the whole day—even after night had fallen and the moon appeared in the sky—constantly leaning against the same pillar on the veranda.
▼
母親は不思議に思い、娘に「お前、どうしていつも其処に居るの? 内へお入りな」と云った。
母親《ははおや》は不思議《ふしぎ》に思《おも》い、娘《むすめ》に「お前《まえ》、どうしていつも其処《そこ》に居《い》るの? 内《うち》へお入《はい》りな」と云《い》った。
Her mother thought it strange; she said to her daughter: "Why are you always sitting there? Come inside."

女は、きっとその割《わ》れ目《め》に耳《みみ》をおしつけて居《い》た。(それを、母親《ははおや》は知《し》らない。)
The woman was pressing her ear firmly against that split. (That was something that the mother did not know.)
▼
彼女は、そうやって耳をつけ、柱の奥から、嘗て自分の恋をした、今も可愛い男の声を聴いて居たのだ。
彼女《かのじょ》は、そうやって耳《みみ》をつけ、柱《はしら》の奥《おく》から、嘗《かつ》て自分《じぶん》の恋《こい》をした、今《いま》も可愛《かわい》い男《おとこ》の声《こえ》を聴《き》いて居《い》たのだ。

The voice of the man who had held her in his arms and called her name; the voice he had spoken in whenever they had sat face to face and told each other all kinds of stories by day or night—it was that beloved voice that she was now hearing.

或、若い女が、真心をこめて一人の男を愛した。そして、結婚し、三年経った。
或《ある》、若《わか》い女《おんな》が、真心《まごころ》をこめて一人《ひとり》の男《おとこ》を愛《あい》した。そして、結婚《けっこん》し、三年《さんねん》経《た》った。
A certain young woman loved one man with all her heart. They got married; three years passed.
- 或: Qualifies 若い女.
- 真心をこめて: Lit. "including a true heart". The verb 込める indicates that the subject puts or "injects" something (usually abstract, such as a certain feeling) into what he does.
▼
But one day that young woman said: "Oh, it's suffocating, so suffocating! My dear one... You are so dear to me, but I'm suffocated here, and I feel like I can't breathe freely." Crying as she said this, she ran away from the man.
- 苦しい: Stressful, suffocating, restrictive, etc. The woman is referring to a psychological rather than physical pain; the marriage makes her feel suffocated.
- 可愛い: Dear, lovable.
- 息がつけない: The negative potential form of the idiom 息を吐く, which means "to breathe a sigh of relief, to breathe freely", and figuratively, "to be at ease".
- 乍ら: Nowadays written exclusively in hiragana.
- 男の傍から: Lit. "from the man's side". The woman distanced herself from the vicinity of the man, i.e., she left him.
- 仕舞った: This ateji spelling is one of the ways of writing the auxiliary verb しまう. Another spelling is 了う, in which the kanji reflects the actual meaning of the word (to finish; to end up).
▼
逃げはしたが、女は他に恋した男があったのではない。彼女は、生れた親の家へ戻った。
逃《に》げはしたが、女《おんな》は他《ほか》に恋《こい》した男《おとこ》があったのではない。彼女《かのじょ》は、生《うま》れた親《おや》の家《いえ》へ戻《もど》った。
She indeed ran away, but it was not the case that there was another man with whom she had fallen in love. She returned to her parents' house, the place where she had been born.
- 逃げはしたが: A concessive construction. は, which marks the concession, is combined with the verb 逃げる; it is inserted between the verb stem and a newly-added auxiliary する.
▼
そして、黙って、二粒の涙をこぼし、頭を振り、やがて寂しく微笑んで縁側に坐った。
そして、黙《だま》って、二粒《につぶ》の涙《なみだ》をこぼし、頭《あたま》を振《ふ》り、やがて寂《さび》しく微笑《ほほえ》んで縁側《えんがわ》に坐《すわ》った。
Then she silently shed two teardrops, shook her head, and finally smiled and sat all alone on the veranda.
- 粒: Counter word for drops of liquid, in this case, teardrops.
- こぼし: From こぼす, to spill, shed, etc.
- 縁側: A narrow wooden deck that surrounds a traditional Japanese house and separates it from the yard. Usually translated as "veranda".
▼
朝眼を覚すと、一日中、月の出る夜になっても、女は、いつも同じ縁の柱によって居る。
朝《あさ》眼《め》を覚《さま》すと、一日中《いちにちじゅう》、月《つき》の出《で》る夜《よる》になっても、女《おんな》は、いつも同《おな》じ縁《えん》の柱《はしら》によって居《い》る。
Starting as soon as she woke up in the morning, the woman spent the whole day—even after night had fallen and the moon appeared in the sky—constantly leaning against the same pillar on the veranda.
- によって居る: Do not confuse with the compound particle によって. In this case に marks the indirect object of the following verb, よって居る, which is the continuous form of 寄る, "to lean" (against the object marked with に).
▼
母親は不思議に思い、娘に「お前、どうしていつも其処に居るの? 内へお入りな」と云った。
母親《ははおや》は不思議《ふしぎ》に思《おも》い、娘《むすめ》に「お前《まえ》、どうしていつも其処《そこ》に居《い》るの? 内《うち》へお入《はい》りな」と云《い》った。
Her mother thought it strange; she said to her daughter: "Why are you always sitting there? Come inside."
- お入りな: A construction that is used to command or urge the listener to perform the verb (in this case, 入る). な is a shortened, less polite variant of the imperative auxiliary なさい.
▼
娘は、微笑した。然し、翌日も、その柱からは離れなかった。
娘《むすめ》は、微笑《びしょう》した。然《しか》し、翌日《よくじつ》も、その柱《はしら》からは離《はな》れなかった。

▼
柱には、縦に深く一本割れ目がついて居た。
柱《はしら》には、縦《たて》に深《ふか》く一本《いっぽん》割《わ》れ目《め》がついて居《い》た。
The pillar had a deep split running vertically.
- 一本: The counter word for the split. 本 is used because the split is a long, thin line.
- 割れ目: A split, a crack.
- ついて居た: Lit. "attached", "be part of" (the pillar).
▼
女は、きっとその割れ目に耳をおしつけて居た。(それを、母親は知らない。)
女は、きっとその割《わ》れ目《め》に耳《みみ》をおしつけて居《い》た。(それを、母親《ははおや》は知《し》らない。)
The woman was pressing her ear firmly against that split. (That was something that the mother did not know.)
- きっと: Firmly, intently. Similar to じっと.
▼
彼女は、そうやって耳をつけ、柱の奥から、嘗て自分の恋をした、今も可愛い男の声を聴いて居たのだ。
彼女《かのじょ》は、そうやって耳《みみ》をつけ、柱《はしら》の奥《おく》から、嘗《かつ》て自分《じぶん》の恋《こい》をした、今《いま》も可愛《かわい》い男《おとこ》の声《こえ》を聴《き》いて居《い》たのだ。
Holding her ear there like that, she was listening to a voice coming from deep inside the pillar: the voice of the man with whom she had formerly been in love, and who was still very dear to her.
- そうやって: Like that.
- 嘗て: Before, in the past, formerly.
- 自分の: The の marks the subject of the subordinate clause that qualifies the noun 男.
▼
自分を抱いて名を呼ぶ声、向い合って坐り、朝や夜、種々の物語をした、その懐しい声を聞いて居たのだ。
自分《じぶん》を抱《だ》いて名《な》を呼《よ》ぶ声《こえ》、向《むか》い合《あ》って坐《すわ》り、朝《あさ》や夜《よる》、種々《しゅじゅ》の物語《ものがたり》をした、その懐《なつか》しい声《こえ》を聞《き》いて居《い》たのだ。
The voice of the man who had held her in his arms and called her name; the voice he had spoken in whenever they had sat face to face and told each other all kinds of stories by day or night—it was that beloved voice that she was now hearing.
- The sequence from 向い合って to をした is a subordinate clause that qualifies その懐しい声.
- 聞いて居た: Note the distinction between this spelling and 聴いて居た in the previous sentence above. These spellings distinguish between "was hearing" (in this sentence) and "was listening" (in the previous one).
