One day, while Duck-san was holding a big, delicious-looking peach that he had gotten from his mother, a voice was suddenly heard behind him: "Hey, Little Duck!"
- あひる: A domestic duck.
- さん: As is commonly done in children's stories, the animals are described as if they were human. The suffix さん also gives each of them definiteness, i.e., makes it clear that someone specific is meant rather than just any duck.
- おいしそうな、大きな: Both adjectives describe the word 桃.
- ちゃん: The diminutive version of さん, used with names of children. This indicates that the character is a duckling.
- や: A final particle indicating a slight surprise or other types of sudden emotion. While translated here using "hey", its primary function is not to attract someone's attention but to emphasize the speaker's own reaction to a given situation.

あひるさんは、後《うしろ》をふりむいて見《み》ると、自分《じぶん》よりもっともっと大《おお》きなあひるさんがつっ立《た》っていますので、おどろいて逃《に》げました。
When Duck-san looked back, he saw a duck much, much bigger than himself standing tall over him; he panicked and ran away.
- 後をふりむいて見ると: Lit. "when [he] turned back and looked".
- In past narration, と often introduces what someone saw or realized as the result of performing some action. The meaning of "he saw", "it turned out that", etc. is built into this expression, even when no explicit words indicate it in the original text. てみると reinforces this shade of meaning even more.
- つっ立っています: From つったつ (突っ立つ), "to stand erect", "to stand tall".
- ので: Used to link cause and effect. This function is similar to but distinct from that of marking reasons (see the next sentence), and is often used in narration where one event causes or leads to another.
▼
桃をとられると大変だと思ったので。
桃《もも》をとられると大変《たいへん》だと思《おも》ったので。
He did it because he thought it would be terrible if the peach was taken away from him.
- 桃をとられる: Passive of adversity. The victim of the action (the little duck) is the recipient of the passive verb, with the affected object (the peach) marked with を. The structure and intended nuance is similar to saying "to be robbed of the peach".
- ので: Marks a reason in this case. The sentence is given as a reason for the duck's running away. Note that this sentence is not structurally independent; it is actually a dependent clause that functions grammatically within the preceding sentence.

あひるさんは、にわとりさんのお家《うち》にはいって、にわとりさんと二人《ふたり》で、戸《と》を内側《うちがわ》からおさえて、桃《もも》をポケツトの中《なか》へかくしました。
Duck-san went into Chicken-san's house; together with Chicken-san he pushed against the door from the inside, and hid the peach in his pocket.
- はいって = 入って.
- にわとりさんと二人で: The subject of the following verbs is technically plural (the two animals), but only おさえて is actually performed by both of them. かくしました is done only by the duck.
- かくしました = 隠しました. Hid, concealed.
▼
そして、窓から外をのぞいてみますと、それはあひるさんのお父さまだったのです。
そして、窓《まど》から外《そと》をのぞいてみますと、それはあひるさんのお父《とう》さまだったのです。
Then they peeked outside through the window—and realized it was actually Duck-san's father.
- だったのです: Expresses a new awareness of a preexisting fact.
▼
まあ何て、あひるさんはあわて者なんでしょう。
まあ何《なん》て、あひるさんはあわて者《もの》なんでしょう。
Oh dear, Duck-san is such an absentminded fellow!
- まあ: A multipurpose interjection, which in this case indicates surprise, mild outrage, etc. In this function it is used primarily by female speakers (the writer of this story is a woman).
- 何て: Used in concert with でしょう and similar conjugations to create an exclamatory phrase. 何て is then interpreted as "what a...!", "how...!" etc.
- あわて者: An absentminded fellow, a rash person, etc. Derived from the verb あわてる, "to be panicked", "to be flustered".
- なん: Contracted from なの as often happens in casual speech. This reinforces the exclamatory tone of the sentence, making it seem like an abrupt, spontaneous comment rather than a carefully written sentence.
