そらのふちは沈《しず》んで行《ゆ》き、松《まつ》の並木《なみき》のはてばかり黝《あおぐろ》んだ琥珀《こはく》をさびしくくゆらし、
The rim of the sky is sinking, and only the edge of the pine tree row is smoking bleakly in blackish-blue amber;
- ふち: An ambiguous word when written in hiragana. Can be interpreted either as 縁 (edge, rim) or 淵 (abyss, depths), both of which are read ふち. The first interpretation seems more likely here, but both can fit in this context.
- はて: End, extremity.
- 黝んだ: A verb that means "to be [tinged with] blackish-blue". Comes from the adjective 黝い (あおぐろい), blackish-blue.
- 琥珀: Amber. The color, rather than the actual substance, is probably meant here.
- くゆらし: A conjugation of the verb 燻らす, "to burn something so that it emits smoke".
- This scene seems to refer to the last streak of sunlight, which is visible just behind the treetops at sunset when the rest of the sky has already turned dark.

その町のはずれのたそがれに、大きなひのきが風に乱れてゆれている。
その町《まち》のはずれのたそがれに、大《おお》きなひのきが風《かぜ》に乱《みだ》れてゆれている。
At dusk in the outskirts of that town, big cypresses are swaying in the wind in disarray.
- たそがれ: Dusk, twilight.
- ひのき: A Japanese cypress, a hinoki tree. The kanji is 檜.
- 乱れて: The trees' uniform appearance is disturbed by the wind as it sways them in all directions.
▼
気圏の松藻だ、ひのきの髪毛。
気圏《きけん》の松藻《まつも》だ、ひのきの髪毛《かみげ》。
They are the atmosphere's matsumo seaweed, those cypress hairs.
- 松藻: This name is shared by two different organisms: a type of seaweed and a type of submerged plant. The seaweed is the more commonly used meaning of this word.
- 髪毛: The hinoki cypress branches are likened to hairs.
- Hinoki branches are similar in appearance to matsumo seaweed. The idea of this sentence is that the trees grow in the open air in the same way that the seaweed grow underwater.

Inside a pitch-black house a dim yellow lamp is on, and a lone young girl with a bright-red face is frantically gulping down rice.
- ラムプ: An older spelling of ランプ. The sound ン in Japanese originally comes from ム.
- ぼんやり点いて: Lit. "faintly being on".
- まっかな = 真っ赤. Bright, deep red.
- かきこんでいる: The verb 掻き込む means "to gulp down [food], to shovel [food] into one's mouth".
▼
かきこんでいる。その澱粉の灰色。
かきこんでいる。その澱粉《でんぷん》の灰色《はいいろ》。
She is gulping it down. The gray color of that starch.
- 澱粉: Indicates the starch of the sticky Japanese rice.

ラムプのあかりに暗の中から引きずり出された梢の緑、実に恐ろしく青く見える。
ラムプのあかりに暗《あん》の中《なか》から引《ひ》きずり出《だ》された梢《こずえ》の緑《みどり》、実《じつ》に恐《おそ》ろしく青《あお》く見《み》える。
In the light of the lamp, the shiny green color of the treetops—having been dragged out of the darkness—looks ever so dreadfully greenish.
- 引きずり出された: The passive of ひきずりだす, to drag [something] out [of somewhere]. The treetops were "dragged out" of the darkness by the light that fell on them.
- 緑 is specifically the lush green color of vegetation, while 青 denotes the whole range of colors from blue to green. In this case the idea seems to be that the trees' green color looks paler and unnatural in the light, verging on the blue. The end of the sentence may also be translated as "looks ever so dreadfully bluish-green".

恐《おそ》ろしく深《ふか》く見《み》える。恐《おそ》ろしくゆらいで見《み》える。

- ゆらいで: From ゆらぐ, to sway, shake.
