On the train back from school, Yoshiko-san said to her friend: "Fusako-san, let's look out the window!" Then she started climbing toward the window without taking off her shoes.
- おともだち の よしこさん: Lit. "the friend, Yoshiko-san". The text defines Yoshiko-san as being the friend of the other character, Fusako-san. Note the rephrasing in the translation.
- おまど: Adding the prefix お is a feature of feminine or childish speech.
- くつ の まま: Lit. "with her shoes still on". The idea is that she did not take off her shoes before climbing on the seat.
- あがろう と します: Lit. "attempt to climb", but here indicating the beginning of Yoshiko's effort to move toward the window. The non-complete (present) verb is used instead of past narration, in order to emphasize the moment of starting the action.
- ので: Used not to indicate a reason but to link one event to another that is triggered by it. This makes it possible to end the translated sentence in a period.
▼
「いけない わ、 よしこさん。 おまど の そと なら、 こしかけて でも みえるじゃない の。」
"Stop it, Yoshiko-san! If you want to see what's outside the window, you can see it just as well while seated, can't you?"
- いけない: Lit. "it's no good".
- わ: A feminine sentence-final particle that adds light assertion or emphasis.
- でも: Added after the preceding te-form to provide the meaning of "even with [this action]".
- じゃない の: A rhetorical question, used to convey an assertion in a softened manner. This usage of の in questions is a shortened variant of のか, and is commonly heard in feminine or childish speech.
▼
「だって、 こう した ほう が、 よく みえる わ。 ほら、 あそこ に いる 子《こ》 だって、 して いるじゃない の。」と、よしこさん は むこう に いる 子《こ》 を ゆびさしました。
"But this way we'll see better! Hey, look at that kid over there, he's doing it too, right?" Said Yoshiko-san and pointed at a child on the other side of the car.
- だって: The first だって is an expression commonly used in childish speech when giving a somewhat defiant reply, excuse, explanation, etc. It can be translated in various ways according to the context. The second だって means "even" and is a colloquial variant of でも.
- ほら: An interjection meaning "hey, look".
▼
「でも、 あの子《こ》 の おとなり の 人《ひと》、 きもの に どろ が つく ので、 こまった かお を して いる わ。
"But the man next to that kid has mud on his clothes, and he's making an unhappy face.
- おとなり: The prefix お + となり.
- きもの: Can mean any type of clothing, not only the traditional Japanese garment.
▼
人《ひと》 の めいわく に なる よう な こと は よしましょう よ。 わたくしたち、 もう 一《いち》ねんせい なん です もの。」
We shouldn't do things that can cause trouble to other people. After all, we are first-graders already!"
- めいわく = 迷惑. Annoyance, inconvenience.
- よしましょう: From よす (止す), "to stop", "to refrain". The ましょう form is applied as a deliberately ambiguous way of encouraging a certain course of action. While actually aimed at the listener ("please stop doing that"), the request is softened by making it sound as if it may include the speaker as well ("let's stop doing that").
- わたくし: The original form of わたし. Usually confined to formal speech.
- Note that the topic わたくしたち appears on its own, the は having been dropped as commonly occurs in colloquial speech.
- もの: A sentence-ending expression that conveys a sense of explaining something or lecturing the listener.
▼
そう いう と、「そう ね」 と よしこさん は すなお に おりて、 きちん と こし を かけました。
When Fusako-san said this, Yoshiko-san responded: "You're right", meekly got off the seat, and sat down on it properly.
- こし を かけました: Sat down. Lit. "placed her hips [on top of something]". This is the term for Western-style sitting on a chair, as opposed to the traditional manner of sitting on the floor. This verbal phrase has also become a standalone verb, こしかける, which can be seen in the text further above.
